Why does Monterey not open many older files with Word, Excel, Preview, VLC ?
It is not predictable. My 15 year old iMac is more reliable. My new iMac with Monterey is mostly failure so far.

Let us start by some Basic Trouble Shooting Techniques before concluding the Computer or macOS is a failure.
1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.
2 - Does the issue present in this mode ?
3 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.
More advanced below -->>
4 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.
5 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

6 - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.
The application is free or paid from added features.
It will take a Snap Shot - both the hardware and software.

I'm the sole admin, manager, whatever of this computer -- except for scam ghosts.
I have to use MacOS extended on a thumb or hard drive, formatted on the old computer, to move stuff from the old to new computer. I had initially tried plugging my external 3 TB Western Digital into the a USB adapter on the new computer and just copying everything into the new iMac-- that resulted in helluva mess with folder contents not matching or just a lot of folders with zero bytes -- so back to moving those files most important to me first.
I apologize to all of you trying to help and offering advice which I appreciate.
My attitude is poor to bad regarding these difficulties which, for instance, Microsoft support was unable to resolve.
I so looked forward to moving my terabytes and tens of thousands of files to a new iMac and continuing using them with the major applications I've been working with for over twenty years. I understand that moving old files into new programs will require incremental steps with prior applications. But current jpegs, gifs, pngs, pdfs, docx, xlsx should not present such issues with sometimes transferring and opening and sometimes not.
