airdrop cancled the copy

Why is AirDrop canceling the transfer from my iMac to my iPad? The file is an h.264 MPEG-4 movie (12.43 GB on disk) created from Media Encoder with the YouTube1080p Full settings, export from Premier. The file resides on an external production usb-3 hard drive. The 27" iMac is a 2019 3.6 GHz from 2019 with 40 gigs system and 500 gig storage memory (Mojave 10.14.6). My 2020 iPad Pro has at least 80 gigs of free space and a fresh reboot (iOS 15.6.1). After I drag-and-drop the icon (Mac to iPad), the sending progress is interrupted with "my name canceled the copy". That's it, no other information accompanies the error.

I ended up going into the iPad settings,

under General, then iPad storage and went on a purge. Even though I had about 80 gigs free, I ended up purging another 20 gigs. Eight of those gigs were freed up when I flat-out deleted the podcast app. After that, I still had to reboot the iPad, but then it worked. I was able to AirDrop my 12 GB file.

It’s possible that there was some fragmentation going on, not allowing for a continuous 12 gigs to be available on the remaining 80 gigs. I just wish that Apple would give us more information when the error pops up. Simply stating that the AirDrop was canceled is not helpful.
