Apple News app keeps crashing

After I updated to the latest OS (15.7), Apple News app keeps crashing after 2~3 minutes. I tried the following:

  1. deleted and reinstalled the app,
  2. rebooted the iPad (shutdown and restart).

Before updating to the latest OS, it would crash intermittently ... maybe once a day or two. Mostly when viewing articles with lots of links. Now, after updating to the latest OS, it would just crash after 2~3 minutes.

I posted a similar comment since updating iPad OS to 16.1.1 - see my topic “Apple news app crashing”. This currently has 69 “Me Too” ticks. Writing from UK if I look at the review ratings against the Apple News App in the App Store there are a horrific number of users giving 1* ratings because of the reported crashes mainly around October through to November. (Search by most recent and most critical).

I have however discovered  by using Product Feedback - Apple (rather than Official Apple Support) that this loads, what I think is a more appropriate link to alert Apple of a “bug” rather than have someone try to solve a widespread problem where all remedial actions have failed.  The Feed Back site allows input with respect to hardware products, iOS & iPad OS, Mac OS Apps, iCloud and lastly SERVICES.  The latter includes APPLE NEWS.  As all my other Apps work fine with iOS 16.1.1  I have filled the form in specifically related to Apple News where the problem lies - more details under my posted topic.

Hello hshung,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities!

We understand the News app is closing after 2-3 minutes of usage since updating to iPadOS 15.7, correct?

Since you've tried deleting and reinstalling the app, along with a restart, let's check the available storage on your iPad. If the available storage is low, this could be expected to occur. Check out the steps below for assistance with viewing the storage, and you can locate additional details here: How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support

Use your device to check its storage

1. Go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage. You might see a list of recommendations for optimizing your device's storage, followed by a list of installed apps and the amount of storage each one uses.

2. Tap an app's name for more information about its storage. Cached data and temporary data might not be counted as usage.

In the detailed view you can:

• Offload the app, which frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data.

• Delete the app, which removes the app and its related data.

• Depending on the app, you might be able to delete some of its documents and data.

If your device is almost full and can't free up space, you might get a Storage Almost Full alert. If you see this alert, you should check the storage recommendations or you need to offload some less-used content like videos and apps.

If you have enough available storage, this may be related to your iPad battery life. You can review the following resource for more details on the battery usage, and you can contact Apple Support directly for assistance with a diagnostic test.

You are correct - nobody knows how to fix it from we “newbies” to the community “experts” with their Kudos. As they point out they are not “Apple” just users like us. I would reiterate report to Apple using Product Feedback - Apple (Services -> News). I also note that there are now over 300 “me too”s against this posting and a similar number on another posting. Also the UK App Store, since mid September had 61 reviews of the Apple News App of which 32 gave 1* reports due to crashes mostly from around late October through to November when OS 16. x arrived - Apple never comment against the reviews unlike reputable app developers - probably because they don’t (daren’t!) monitor the feed back. Also the App support link just links to general Apple support not to app support per se. I have raised this with Apple as well as the crashing issue again.

Hi Brandon_J_321,

Thanks for your reply!

Regarding your suggestions:

1) The iPad has plenty of memory. It has over 50% available.

2) Regarding the battery, it didn't matter if the battery was low or high, the News app would keep crashing.

I think I found the problem. It's with the background app refresh. A few years ago, I turned it off to save battery, or at least make it last longer. I turned it back on and allowed the News app to refresh. Now it's running properly and not crashing. Let's hope it stays that way.

Thanks.

Thanks for that. When I first Googled this issue, your comment didn't pop up. The others didn't quite describe my problem, so I wrote my own.

As for my problem, the frequent crashing seems to be very intermittent. For a while, it was pretty stable (after my last post/"solution"), but today it would crash after a minute or two. Not sure what's going on there since I didn't update anything.

Thanks for the link. I'll post there as well.

For some time I have encountered a problem whereby on entering a reply and pressing send the field goes red with a comment to the effect “cannot save - try later” this continues but seems to resolve if I log out and then back in when the posting is restored from archive and is then sendable. Whatever is happening to Apple in the UK? Come back Northumbria University Graduate Sir Jony Ive!

Some forum authors suggest that the crashing problems are due to low memory so I have tabulated the available memories both storage and probably more importantly RAM on our four devices and this definitely rules this out.

Device.        Chip.  Speed.   Cores.     RAM.    Mem.    Avail.

iPad Pro 9.7*.  A9x.  2.1 GHz       2        2GB   128GB.  61.3GB.

iPad Air 2.**.   A8x.   1.5 GHz      3        2GB    64GB.  17.5GB

iPhone 13.     A15.   3.2 GHz   6(2+4)     4GB    128GB.  79.7GB

*Apple news crashes on this iPad since OS 16.1 up to 16.1.2

** Apple news does not crash on my wife’s slightly older Air but I hadn’t realised that she is running OS 15.7 which is now the latest update available for that device apart from security updates.

The Jetsam crash reports on my Pro show “iPhone OS 16.1.1” , product “iPad6,3” and build “iPhone OS16.1.1 (20B101).” Why Apple are identifying what was a later release of iPad OS as being “iPhone 16.1.1” is very suspicious

I am more than ever convinced that the issues have evolved on the iPad since the OS 16.x update series and that is where the issue should be resolved.

Experiencing serious crashing problems with the Apple News app on my iPad since the OS 16 xx I have tried all suggested remedial actions to no avail.

One suggestion was to uninstall the News App and then re-install. Although this did not remedy the problem I note that in the App Store the News App does not have a version number unlike third party apps. The same is true for all the Apple packaged apps including eg Pages, Numbers, Photos etc. and these never appear in updates. It is vaguely suggested elsewhere that the OS packaged apps are updated with each OS update. That being the case how do I know that the “version” I am re-installing from the Store is the latest - and not an earlier version with any associated operational issues?

It is rumoured that OS16.2 may be released next week and hopefully will have a fix in place for the widely reported News App crashing issue. That being the case may it be advisable, before updating, to once again delete the News App, not to reinstall from the store, but let re-installation take place through the OS installation process. Hopefully this may rectify the News crashing problem alongside updating to the latest OS.
