Ventura - External Displays not working

Since upgrading to Ventura, my external 5k (LG 49WL95C) monitor no longer works.

The screen goes completely garbled, I can see the mouse cursor, but everything else is completely distorted.

I have tried using a USB-C direct into the monitor, as well as a USB-C to DisplayPort. When I use a USB-C to and HDMI dongle, I can get it to work as a 4k.

HI, in case you're getting the issue of the garbled external display in macOS Ventura I just found a temporary solution:

  • Sign in the macbook without the USB type-C attached
  • Open Terminal and Type:
sudo sleep 20 ; sudo kill -9 $(pgrep WindowServer)
  • Type your password
  • Connect your USB Type-C
  • At this moment both of your screens might get garbled but don't worry as the command above will run in 20 seconds, after that the process will restart and hopefully after that your external monitor should be working by now.
  • By default the resolution should be defaulted to 3200*900 but you can updated the settings, I'm now running at 5120* 1440 without any issues.
  • If you restart your mac you need to run the command again.

I posted the same issue a few hours before this with a detailed list of steps I proceeded trying to solve the problem.

none of them worked. I also reviewed the etrecheck logs but I cant find any relation to my issues.

It seems like theres a problem with the graphics and/or display driver in normal mode. maybe its a problem with the usb-c controler as there are several people that they have similar issues with some usb-c hardware, which works quite well in the safe boot, but not in normal mode

I am using an M1 max macbook pro 16”. I have had 2 monitors and other peripherals attached to my computer via a Lenovo dock and a thunderbolt 4 cable. This rig has worked all year, up until this morning when I updated to Ventura 13.0. Now the computer does not recognise any external monitors, with or without dock. Cables, monitors and dock work on another computer just fine.

Things I have tried:

-Reboot

-Unplug monitors from wall

-Connect monitors via hdmi cable and no dock

-Connect monitors via DP to usb c cable and no dock

-Connect everything with dock (everything else including charging works as before but monitors are not recognised)

-Reinstall ventura

-Safe mode reboot

This used to be absolutely fine on mac os 12.6. Please hurry with a fix, I am not getting work done like this.
