Usb C hub not working on MacOS Ventura

Hi guys,

I’ve updated my M1 Macbook Pro to MacOS Ventura 13.0. Ever since, the usb c hub of my Dough Spectrum ES07D03 stopped working (and it still is working on Windows).

I’ve allowed accessories to connect (setting is set at “Always” in System Preferences > Privacy & Security), and the OS asked me if i wanted to allow some USB peripherals to connect to the macbook.

After tweaking a bit here and there yesterday, it finally worked as it should. But this morning, it didn’t. Let me explain my setup quickly:

My Macbook pro is closed on my desktop, with an HDMI cable plugged in to it, going to my 2nd screen.

It has a thunderbolt 3 cable going into the Spectrum, and on the hub I have: a logitech dongle for a wireless headset, an usb-c webcam plugged in in the usb-c port, and usb hub from anker in the last usb A port, which powers mouse, keyboard, and external mic.

I used to just type randomly on my keyboard to wake the whole thing up. This morning, nothing happened. I opened my macbook and told me the following thing:

So i’ve tried unplugging everything and tada: when unplugging / plugging my mic back, everything went up and working.

But everytime my macbook goes into sleep mode, it does the same thing. I have to open the lid, then unplug / wait / plug my usb devices again to make it work correctly.

I'm thinking about downgrading to Monterey where everything was working perfectly, unless you guys know what i can do about it ?

Sharing my own solution that I discovered today. Short Version: Check your Allow accessories to connect option. You can find this in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Scroll down and you'll find it above FireVault. I changed this value to Automatically When Unlocked and it solved everything.

Long Version: I have a USB C display out to a monitor that has USB A ports. Display works without issues after updating to Ventura, but the USB A ports stopped reading devices. In addition to this, I noticed my external HDD wasn't direct connecting via USB C either. After several unplug/replug attempts, I noticed a prompt would pop up but disappear in less than a second. Had to record my screen and playback frame by frame to read it. It was asking me to allow the accessory to connect. I changed the value in the settings described above and solved all USB C issues including the HDD and hub! The strange thing is that the Allow prompt never showed up when I tried using the USB hub. My guess is that this prompt is not showing up for most devices and leaving Ventura users in the dark.

I couldn't bear it and called support. Safe-Mode and all the resets etc. didn't work, but reinstalling Ventura using Recovery actually did...

I am not sure whether it'll break again or not, but currently it works as expected now.

I still wish we had a way to undo the last update (at least and especially a major one), but at least my issue is currently solved. Both the screen (USB-C) and the WD19S Dell Docking Station work now.

Updated to Venture 13.1 > Nothing changed in System Settings Menu so I still can not grand access to any USB/Thunderbolt device because this option is still not available for Non M chip macbooks. I really hoped Apple would fix this in a relative big update in Ventura.... So I am keeping my special adapter-cable-adapter solution untill there is a fix.

Question: does anybody know if there is a terminal command to force this setting? Or maybey a thirdparty solution?

Oddly enough my USB-C hub works with 13.1... sometimes. After closing all programs and rebooting it seems as if the USB-C Hub (Dell WD19S) is recognized and delivers LAN, Power and Keyboard properly (HDMI was sketchy before Ventura, too).

However: after sleep-mode it seems to pick up the hub, but to drop it a couple of seconds later and after that the hub does not even work with another M1 Max laptop, that is still on 12.x MacOS. Unplugging and reattaching power from/to the hub makes it work under MacOS 12.x again and - if I had rebooted - Ventura, too.

It's really odd and I still dislike it, that Apple broke stuff, that used to work.

Actually: all my terminal customizations as well as all my applications remained the same. Furthermore it seems the bug has not gone away - neither with the recovery, nor with the 13.1 update. It just so happens, that after a fresh reboot (and before sleep mode gets activated) the USB-C hub is very likely to work. After sleep mode or several opened applications (dev stuff, does not access USB for what I know) it usually turns on for a couple of seconds and stops working thereafter.

Having the same issue with my Dell U3421WE monitor since upgrading to Ventura last week.

It has a built-in powered hub that my speakers, webcams, and other accessories are plugged into. I close my Macbook and connect via USB and then use everything. But, last week, when I upgraded, all of the passthrough features no longer work.

Sad to learn I'm not alone in this, but also glad to know it isn't just me.

Still not working. I talked some hours with the Apple support they tried to fix it. At this moment I turned my USB C double connected at my Mac Book air so that I can use at least one entrance. For 4 days it is incredible Apple cannot fix this minor problem. The last advice the Apple support gave my......... I had to go the the apple store to have checked my HARDWARE!! According to them it is not a software problem. So guys, let's go to Silicon Valley. 😉

How the **** is this still happening?

I have an M1 Ultra Mac Studio and I have used both the OWC Thunderbolt 4 hub and the Anker Thunderbolt 4 Mini-Dock, and I am getting completely random ejections of my Samsung T5 SSDs.

People have said all you need to do is "Allow All USB Accessories" in the Privacy settings, but that option is literally not there in my settings panel above FileVault, even though it shows up in the search results. I am on the latest edition of Ventura.

What the **** is going on?

Macs without a built in display don’t show that option – I think that is the option that’s on by default. I have a M1 Mac Mini that doesn’t show this option; my M2 MacBook Air does have this option.

The connectivity issues to devices through USB hubs does not away when setting this setting on my M2. Both my M2 and M1 Macs experience this issue constantly.

Just tell me!

Still big problems with my HUB. After contacting the Apple support in the Netherlands they phoned me back and we went through the whole Ventura 13.1 soft-ware. The Apple Support Senior was very polite and helpful, but he could not find any kind of problem at the soft-ware. The day after I became an other phone call and that guy told me that my problem is a hard-ware error. NEVER had that problem before with Monterey. At this moment I am going to wait for a new up-date before spending my money for nothing. 😤

This started happening on Ventura (13.0) for me with a Lacie 2big Thunderbolt 3 Dock in JBOD mode. The 2big is connected via a high quality Thunderbolt 3 cable and (at the moment) has 2 disks, and daisy chains a TimeMachine and a DisplayPort monitor. I updated to macOS 13.1 and it was not improved. I use a 2020 27-inch iMac. I've never had any issues with this setup until recently. Strangely, the issue for me seems to have begun after I returned from a couple weeks of travel. When I left, I shut down the iMac, and powered off all my external gear, and unplugged the Lacie 2big. When I returned, I powered up all the accessories, and started the iMac. Now, whenever the machine goes to sleep, I'll return to messages about "Disk not ejected properly" for both the drives in the 2big. I've also noticed that light on the front of the 2big seems to blink on/off when the iMac is asleep, which it didn't do before. I'm assuming the amount of those blinks I see corresponds roughly with how many (lots) of the "Disk not ejected properly" notifications I get. Also worth noting, I use a couple Universal Audio Apollo Thunderbolt audio interfaces. Since returning, they also have a greater incidence of misbehaving when the iMac wakes from sleep. They almost always seem to require being physically disconnected from the iMac, and sometimes each need to be power cycled before they are able to interact with the controller app in macOS again. Until that happens the app is frozen and the interfaces are unresponsive.

Yeah, I have had a problem with two USB C hubs on my macbook air M1, and not just with Ventura. When it happened with the first one, I assumed that I'd broken one of hte connectors (it's a wavlink hub , which has two USB C plugs that go into both ports on the macbook air.

Now I've investigated, they both work for power, but neither of the USB ports seem to work beyond that. I can see lights come on when USB sticks or hard drives are plugged in, but they don't get recognised in finder, nor are they present in Disk Utility.

Neither does my HDMI adapter work when plugged into the USBC input on the hub.

I'm very interested to work this out, it's kind of stuffing up my work, a lot.

All the drives etc, work when plugged directly into the computer via an adapter, but not into the hub. Aaaaargh, feels like it should be simple.
