Usb C hub not working on MacOS Ventura

Hi guys,

I’ve updated my M1 Macbook Pro to MacOS Ventura 13.0. Ever since, the usb c hub of my Dough Spectrum ES07D03 stopped working (and it still is working on Windows).

I’ve allowed accessories to connect (setting is set at “Always” in System Preferences > Privacy & Security), and the OS asked me if i wanted to allow some USB peripherals to connect to the macbook.

After tweaking a bit here and there yesterday, it finally worked as it should. But this morning, it didn’t. Let me explain my setup quickly:

My Macbook pro is closed on my desktop, with an HDMI cable plugged in to it, going to my 2nd screen.

It has a thunderbolt 3 cable going into the Spectrum, and on the hub I have: a logitech dongle for a wireless headset, an usb-c webcam plugged in in the usb-c port, and usb hub from anker in the last usb A port, which powers mouse, keyboard, and external mic.

I used to just type randomly on my keyboard to wake the whole thing up. This morning, nothing happened. I opened my macbook and told me the following thing:

So i’ve tried unplugging everything and tada: when unplugging / plugging my mic back, everything went up and working.

But everytime my macbook goes into sleep mode, it does the same thing. I have to open the lid, then unplug / wait / plug my usb devices again to make it work correctly.

I'm thinking about downgrading to Monterey where everything was working perfectly, unless you guys know what i can do about it ?

Sharing my own solution that I discovered today. Short Version: Check your Allow accessories to connect option. You can find this in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Scroll down and you'll find it above FireVault. I changed this value to Automatically When Unlocked and it solved everything.

Long Version: I have a USB C display out to a monitor that has USB A ports. Display works without issues after updating to Ventura, but the USB A ports stopped reading devices. In addition to this, I noticed my external HDD wasn't direct connecting via USB C either. After several unplug/replug attempts, I noticed a prompt would pop up but disappear in less than a second. Had to record my screen and playback frame by frame to read it. It was asking me to allow the accessory to connect. I changed the value in the settings described above and solved all USB C issues including the HDD and hub! The strange thing is that the Allow prompt never showed up when I tried using the USB hub. My guess is that this prompt is not showing up for most devices and leaving Ventura users in the dark.

Yeah, I have had a problem with two USB C hubs on my macbook air M1, and not just with Ventura. When it happened with the first one, I assumed that I'd broken one of hte connectors (it's a wavlink hub , which has two USB C plugs that go into both ports on the macbook air.

Now I've investigated, they both work for power, but neither of the USB ports seem to work beyond that. I can see lights come on when USB sticks or hard drives are plugged in, but they don't get recognised in finder, nor are they present in Disk Utility.

Neither does my HDMI adapter work when plugged into the USBC input on the hub.

I'm very interested to work this out, it's kind of stuffing up my work, a lot.

All the drives etc, work when plugged directly into the computer via an adapter, but not into the hub. Aaaaargh, feels like it should be simple.

Yeah- how come? I only hit reply. But yeah- first time on here . How come some Apple guys can’t just answer the question?? I’ve tried a few of theses suggestions and nothing’s working so far.

I have a G-tech ES pro and G-speed (raid boxes) I use for Network show editing (avid). They worked great (mounted) on my INTEL I7 Imac untill I updated from 10 to 13.2. Oddly, they mount fine on my macbook pro 19. No hard drives will mount on either of my the 2 thunderbolts or 4 USB 3 ports. I was able to get a "J5create" hub out of one of the thunderbolts to run my two additional HDMI input monitors. That took some fanagleing (unplugging re plugging, power off on, etc). All ports do send power to drives but will not read data. Very strange. I have to try my I/O Avid Artist (Black Magic). So, bottom line, 13.2 does not have "the fix." Again, they mount fine on my macbook pro with 13.1 ventura. It seems that "data read" is turned off on intel machines with no "settings" to fix.

MacBook PRO 14 M1 MAX

Ventura 13.4 (updated 30th of May 2023)

I have the same problem with Satechi Multi Adapter. It doesn't work when the device doesn't have its own power supply.

So pen drives, USB-A -> USB-C cable (data trasfer), bluetooth adapters external drives don't work.

But when I plug in a HDD drive with external power supply it works or the HDMI slot works pretty nice.

The hub has SSD M2 enclousure - it detects the disk but when I want to upload some data on it, the disc stops the transfer and is removed automatically.

I tried usign didfferent USB-C port, I did the SMC reset and it doesn't help.

Are there any other options?

Follow on from my prior post - update: after a few more weeks of frustration, Anker provided a new hub. In the meantime, I had already given up on them and bought a Kensington 5700T thunderbolt. That worked well until today - no more power via USB A. I am afraid I will have to go through another long discussion with Apple support.

Edit: after Macbook restart, power was restored to the USB A (mouse) and (android) phone.

Interestingly I was asked if I want to allow USB to get connected after setting "always ask" What it does: It only asks for the hub to be allowed. When plugging in SSD or anything else there is no more dialog asking to allow. So for me it´s a big bug in system. System should also ask for peripherals plugged into the hub but it doesn´t. So that´s the point where developers have to bugfix in my opinion.

My 2020 Macbook Air kept crashing with sudden USB disconnection from the USB dock when using the USB-C docking station with an external display every so often (like once every 45 minutes to one hour) after I upgraded to Ventura OS. I suspect it may be due to the USB-C privacy protection feature from the new OS. The docking station I use is the Totu USB-C Dock TT-DC002A (https://www.amazon.com/TOTU-Upgraded-Universal-Charging-Extended/dp/B0838WTFD1/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?crid=10T4MHAMHEUDS&keywords=Totu+USB-C+Dock+TT-DC002A&qid=1666989763&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIwLjg3IiwicXNhIjoiMC4wMCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMDAifQ==&s=electronics&sprefix=totu+usb-c+dock+tt-dc002a,electronics,890&sr=1-3-spons&th=1). I have tried using two different docking stations of the exact same model and reverted back to the Monterey OS without the disconnection issue, so I have confirmed the hardware is functional. I appreciate it if someone could have a solution to the issue. Thanks!

I've just tried to disable RayCast from launching at login, shutdown, boot, and nothing works. I've even had issues having the mac recognize my main screen (and at the same time, my hub) through the usbc/thunderbolt cable.

The only solution for me to make it work is to unplug my mic and keyboard everytime the MBP wakes up from sleep, then wait for my mouse to light up, telling me that it is now okay to plug the rest. then it works as expected, until the next sleep mode. very, very, VERY frustating, even more when knowing that everything was working perfectly on Monterey.

This is my monitor, which comes with a self powered hub.

https://www.dough.tech/products/spectrum-4k-144hz

I've added this, to have more ports. mouse, keyboard, and mic are plugged in in this one.

https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00Y25XFGK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

What I have left is a logitech streamcam plugged to the usb c port of the hub of my screen, and a logitech dongle for my headset.

I'm reminding that everything works flawlessly on windows, so the hardware here is not the issue.

I cannot tell you if they are recognized since my MBP has only usb c ports and everything here (apart from the webcam) is usb a.
