Usb C hub not working on MacOS Ventura

Hi guys,

I’ve updated my M1 Macbook Pro to MacOS Ventura 13.0. Ever since, the usb c hub of my Dough Spectrum ES07D03 stopped working (and it still is working on Windows).

I’ve allowed accessories to connect (setting is set at “Always” in System Preferences > Privacy & Security), and the OS asked me if i wanted to allow some USB peripherals to connect to the macbook.

After tweaking a bit here and there yesterday, it finally worked as it should. But this morning, it didn’t. Let me explain my setup quickly:

My Macbook pro is closed on my desktop, with an HDMI cable plugged in to it, going to my 2nd screen.

It has a thunderbolt 3 cable going into the Spectrum, and on the hub I have: a logitech dongle for a wireless headset, an usb-c webcam plugged in in the usb-c port, and usb hub from anker in the last usb A port, which powers mouse, keyboard, and external mic.

I used to just type randomly on my keyboard to wake the whole thing up. This morning, nothing happened. I opened my macbook and told me the following thing:

So i’ve tried unplugging everything and tada: when unplugging / plugging my mic back, everything went up and working.

But everytime my macbook goes into sleep mode, it does the same thing. I have to open the lid, then unplug / wait / plug my usb devices again to make it work correctly.

I'm thinking about downgrading to Monterey where everything was working perfectly, unless you guys know what i can do about it ?

Sharing my own solution that I discovered today. Short Version: Check your Allow accessories to connect option. You can find this in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Scroll down and you'll find it above FireVault. I changed this value to Automatically When Unlocked and it solved everything.

Long Version: I have a USB C display out to a monitor that has USB A ports. Display works without issues after updating to Ventura, but the USB A ports stopped reading devices. In addition to this, I noticed my external HDD wasn't direct connecting via USB C either. After several unplug/replug attempts, I noticed a prompt would pop up but disappear in less than a second. Had to record my screen and playback frame by frame to read it. It was asking me to allow the accessory to connect. I changed the value in the settings described above and solved all USB C issues including the HDD and hub! The strange thing is that the Allow prompt never showed up when I tried using the USB hub. My guess is that this prompt is not showing up for most devices and leaving Ventura users in the dark.

Entirely possible that it's also user error, but this may be the clunkiest, most Microsofty discussion format I've used. With apologies for confusing strings, I think I got a separate DM-email from you (Cineman18) asking for link to my comment. I was replying to comment by shyism on November 8th. I'd copy it here but copy/past doesn't seem to work. Hope that person's suggestion, which helped me, helps you too.

13.2 makes my devices more reliably connect, but it’s still not as good as 12.*.

unplugging/replugging my USB C device connection *while the device is unlocked* usually fixes connectivity issues for me now, which is a simpler workaround than I had before. This is still unacceptable performance but at least I no longer dread unplugging my laptop from its workstation.

Well, I think I figured it out.

Out of curiousity I ordered and received a Thunderbolt 3 (THREE) cable (0.8 M original Apple White) and it is working for me for 1 hour now flawlessly. I am using a Studio Display on an Intel Macbook Pro as an external screen/camera and hub.

With original Thunderbolt 4 (FOUR) cable nothing but trouble from the start. Fingers crossed.... and mayby worth a try for the other Mac users.

I have a G-tech ES pro and G-speed (raid boxes) I use for Network show editing (avid). They worked great (mounted) on my INTEL I7 Imac untill I updated from 10 to 13.2. Oddly, they mount fine on my macbook pro 19. No hard drives will mount on either of my the 2 thunderbolts or 4 USB 3 ports. I was able to get a "J5create" hub out of one of the thunderbolts to run my two additional HDMI input monitors. That took some fanagleing (unplugging re plugging, power off on, etc). All ports do send power to drives but will not read data. Very strange. I have to try my I/O Avid Artist (Black Magic). So, bottom line, 13.2 does not have "the fix." Again, they mount fine on my macbook pro with 13.1 ventura. It seems that "data read" is turned off on intel machines with no "settings" to fix.

Sorry, but this seems not to be the case. I've just upgraded my Mac Book Pro 13' (2017) to Ventura 13.2 and still cannot connect to USB-C hub attached external disks. Either they are not visible at all, or when trying to connect for the first time after rebooting it shows up on the desktop very shortly and then an error message is displayed 'Disk not Ejected Properly', and then it's diconnected. Then there's no chance to reconnect by unplugging/ replugging the USB device. Great job Apple !

Finally got my setup working. 13.3 improved things, but I still wasn't getting reliable connections without fiddling. Turns out my self-powered USB Hub was not working well enough – replacing it with a better model worked for me. My old model had individual power switches per USB plug. The new one does not. Old model had lower voltage output than the new model as well – it's possible some of the USB connections weren't getting enough power.

The newer hub I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BHLMKCL4

The older hub I just tossed was similar to this model (same brand and general feature set, but the exact model I had is discontinued): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B7WVY8QF

My old hub was working fine for me on macOS 12 though, so there may be a software component to the failure. That said, I also plugged more devices into the hub after updating to macOS 13, so who knows.

Thanks for the update. It certainly sounds like the old hub could not handle some of the power demands, and adding additional devices (extra loads) would not have helped.

Even something as simple as timing can make a difference, imagine a (theoretical) hub with a 2.5A rating and two 1.5A devices connected. If the power demands never conflict they might work happily together for years, but one day both devices demand power at the same moment. When that occurs the result depends on the designs of all the hardware involved. Sometimes the 5v USB power will simply sag to a lower voltage like 4v, but in other designs there may be overload or under-voltage protection which shuts down the overloaded supply completely until everything is shut down and restarted.

I was online trying to decide on a non-Apple Monitor (price is my reason) to use with my MBP M1 14" 2021 and found two that look interesting. In reading the reviews I found several low ratings because the USB-C would not allow the monitor to work with the MBP. One person responded after talking with Apple Support and Dell for 2 hours. He reports  that "according to both manufacturers, Ventura, 13.2 operating system will not allow the Dell (and many others) to connect via USB C. According to both, there is some safety feature that Apple put in their latest software to protect it from using other manufacturers' USB-C monitors. In particular, Apple mentioned, Dell, LG, BenQ. "

I am wondering if anyone affiliated with Apple knows if there is any truth to this statement. People can say anything on the internet and I think that much of the time, people are being honest and trying to help. And there are certainly those who lie and enjoy stirring up trouble. I have no way to know about the validity of this person's statement and I am not endorsing it to this Community. It occurred to me to come here and ask more experienced and knowledgeable users what the truth is.

I really need a new monitor as I'm using my MBP screen at the moment and my eyes are begging me for a 27" monitor :-)

Thank you for any help and/or answers you have to the claim I shared or where else I can find out. I don't want to buy one, of course, that in the end won't work.

Only the best,

Michelle

There are lots of knowledgeable and experienced people here. However, they will not be Apple employees. This is a user-to-user support forum and Apple's participation is limited. If you want to get the answer directly from Apple, you'll need to contact them directly. You can start with the Support link at the bottom left of every page of these forums.

Perform SMC reset Intel only.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

On an Intel you can't find Preferences > Privacy & Security, "Allow accessories to connect".

You can search with Spotlight... "Acces".

But you can click on that and go there but it won't be visible.

I'm on Ventura 13.3.1, MacBook air, i5, 2020. I couldn't charge my Mac.

My mouse Logitech M705 via hub stuttering.
