MacOS Ventura Updated - MacBook Pro M1 Pro screen flickers now as my second monitor

I currently have my 14" MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) hooked up to an external monitor and I use the MacBook Pro's screen as my second monitor via a Thunderbolt 4 dock. However, after updating to MacOS Ventura, I noticed that MacBook Pro's screen starts to flicker intermittently. This never happened before and I was wondering if there was a fix for this?

I tried upgrading to the Ventura 13.1 Release Candidate earlier today, no improvement at all, actually slightly worse than I have had the last few days with Ventura 13.0.1.

I sent in a new feedback to my existing ticket in the feedback application today with 13.1 RC installed, no response or any signs of activity from Apple's side since 26 October, also states zero similar reports.

I have just wiped the drive and reinstalled Monterey, and flickering is not any issue anymore. This happens exclusively with macOS Ventura.

Following Pavan Kulkarni's line of thinking I was actually was able to fix my flickering.

On Ventura's "System Settings" then "Displays" selected the display that was flickering, and changed the Preset from Apple Display (P3-500 nits) to Pro Display XDR (P3-1600 nits). Has not flickered at all in the last while, before it was flickering a few times a minute.

Hope this helps somebody.

Are all of you connected to HDMI or Thunderbolt. It's happening to me as well on HDMI and as I typed this I did notice something that is fixing the problem. Try to switch off True Tone and check how it works. And mine's an Intel Mac 16 inch from 2019.

But apart from this, a lot of other display glitches like if I double tap for Mission Control, multiple windows flicker and overlap for a fraction of a second. Hope they fix all these soon, seems like driver issues.

This also happens to me on my MacBook Pro M1 13-inch (2020) connected to a Gigabyte M27Q via USB-C. I can reproduce it with 100% consistency by doing the following:

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Set external monitor as "Main Display"
  2. Open any browser on the external monitor (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) and set to full screen.
  3. Go to YouTube and play any video. Leave it playing in standard view.
  4. (Important) On the MacBook display, open any application and set to full screen. I use Spotify.
  5. Back on the external monitor, open Control Center (via Menu Bar) and enable/disable True Tone or Night Shift. Flickering won't occur if you do this on the MacBook display.
  6. Observe flickering.

I'm almost certain that it's an issue with Ventura because flickering occurs with almost any browser and application combination, so long as you follow the steps listed above.

Actually, the same is happening for me as well after the update (to 13.1 from Monterey). Mostly facing this issue while using RDP (Microsoft Remote Desktop). If RDP is opened on the external monitor and another app (in fullscreen mode) is placed on the MacBook - MacBook's display will be flickering. Disabling True Tone helps, but that's not the way. What's interesting: if I switch the app on my MacBook to the empty desktop - it won't be flickering. Also, it won't flicker if both displays are using RDP. Another interesting detail is that flickering depends on the display we are using, if we change RDP to the fullscreen app on external display and the fullscreen app to RDP on the MacBook - external display will be flickering. So, really weird behaviour. I'm 100% sure it's not related to hardware, but we also want to know some updates from Apple... The video of flickering is attached, it was created 2 months ago by someone and looks the same for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSYtXmngD4s&ab_channel=ShaquilleFuller

I have the same issue.

I am using a MacBook Pro 16'' (M1 Pro), connected to 2 external monitors with a Thunderbolt 3 to 2 DP adapter.

External Monitors: Dell U2718Q and LG 27UL550W

It happens a few times per hour, seems very random to me, sometimes it just happens when I am not doing anything.

It usually happens a few times in a row, lasts for about 10 seconds. Desktop picture goes black and Dock disappear, and they comes back in a second.

It seems to be the Dock process keeps dying and relaunches. Looks exactly the same as if I run this command in terminal:

killall Dock
