Apple TV music streaming

I use my Apple TV mainly to play music from Music app, however I like to browse on my phone them AirPlay it to my Apple TV. My question is, is the Apple TV streaming that music from the apple Music server and my phone is just acting as the remote? Or and I simply Airplaying music to my Apple TV?

reason I ask is because I want to play music at its highest sample rate, but AirPlay would put a cap on that. Thanks.

The Music app on the Apple TV 4K box can play tracks in higher quality that AirPlay supports, if your audio system supports that higher quality. Else it is exactly the same. For AirPlay, the stream is ‘forwarded’ to the Apple TV box, within the constraints of the AirPlay protocol and the Apple TV box capabilities (and audio system capabilities).

The sample rate for music on Apple TV is 44.1 kHz almost always, so that doesn’t matter. But there is also bitrate (kbps) and bit depth (16-bit, 24 bit) to consider. There is also compressed, lossless and Dolby Atmos to consider.
