iPad HDMI won't match my TV

People have complained that when you hook an iPad to a TV via the HDMI adapter, the answer is "iPad doesn't have the same aspect ratio" or some such nonsense. This is a BS answer. My TV is a 16x9 display and I'm pretty sure I can watch 16x9 movies on my iPad at full screen. Also, if I watch the exact same media on my iPhone connected to the same TV with the same HDMI adapter, it works fine, full screen, no black bars.

What's the deal, Apple???
