Ever have the front on your iMac fall off when no one is in your home

Have you ever experienced the front of your 27" iMac falling off?

After being away for about 5 hours I returned to find the front on the floor and the glass intact but shattered beyond belief. I have another, but older and have never seen or heard of this happening.

iMac 27″, macOS 12.6

About two years ago the internal hard drive crashed (did not know there was an additional internal drive) and the computer store in our community, which does 90% repairs and support, did replace the drive. Is this suspect?

Absolutely!

Apple may not include the tape. If not you can get it elsewhere:

The tape is extremely strong however if the shop did not replace it then it definitively does not have the same strength as new. Ever try to use scotch tape twice, basically the same idea. This means the computer shop did you no favors. The tape is pretty inexpensive and comes in pre cut kits, the shop obviously did not take this step. Why, who knows! Macs should only be serviced by Apple Authorized Service Providers as the have the correct training, tools and knowledge. Never ever take them to a pc repair shop or the issues like you are going through will happen.

Believe me, it is now at Mezzabyte Computer Repair awaiting a $300 replacement. This is not "fishy." Our home has a Casita (my office), and I picked up email about 7:15 am and then headed to the golf course. I returned about 1:15 pm and when I opened the door and walked to my desk, it was there on the floor face down and NO one entered the Casita as my wife was at a volunteer location (we are retired). There were two black ribbon cables visible attached to the rear and both had separated at the connector. The front appeared to be held in place by black double face adhesive tape although there were metal clips along the top edge. I also have an older iMac and a 15" Laptop Pro so I'm very "Apple" and have never had a problem and I'm not asking Apple for help or anyone other than curiosity!

That is almost impossible to happen. 27" iMacs made up until 2012 had extremely strong magnets that held the display to the computer and models from 2012-2020 used extremely strong adhesive to adhere the display to the computer. All 27" iMacs had a variety of cables attached internally to connect to various parts of the main logic board too. This is why your claim that the front of the iMac "fell off" sounds so fishy.

About two years ago the internal hard drive crashed (did not know there was an additional internal drive) and the computer store in our community, which does 90% repairs and support, did replace the drive. Is this suspect? Probably, although they have a great reputation in our adult golf and retirement community of 5,000 homes. I did notice the black double faced tape was "tacky" feeling but also did not know the front was only held on by adhesive tape because I saw, what I thought were metal clips across the top. Not sure what they are for but honestly, was more interested in having it replaced as soon as possible. I received a call late today and it is ready to pick up. I've seen many things "happen" in my 82 years and blame no one and this is the case here. I appreciate the responses from the Forum as after having Macs for over 25 years have never been there. My wife was an IBM employee and therefore did not use Macs until I went to the Kodak Center for Creativity in 1991and was introduced to Photoshop One and the change became a necessity.

When the internal hard drive was installed two years ago they used the Apple tape as they keep it in inventory. It was used again Tuesday when the new front arrived and all seems to be in order. As I said in what I thought was a reply, I've learned "things happen" from the very best companies and their products (I have personal experience). Thanks again for all of the supported responses.
