iPhone 14 Pro Max app switcher stutter / lag (Widespread!)

I have been dealing with what now seems to be a widespread issue on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. When in the app switcher, there is a horrible stutter/lag while swiping on an app to go back to the home page. This happens randomly but on all apps, both Apple and third party. Restarting the device will ‘fix’ the issue for a couple of hours, before it starts happening again. The longer the phone is running without a restart, the worse it gets and the stutter will happen every single time, other functions will start to be slow / laggy as well.

This is specific to iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max units, reported by many users on different forums and Reddit threads. This DOES NOT happen on my iPhone 13 Pro Max on the same iOS version (16.1) with the same back up and data, which makes it clear that it’s specific to iPhone 14 Pros and possibly a hardware issue!?

I also don’t believe it’s related to iOS 16 as some people noted, otherwise more iPhone models would be affected.

If it’s software related, why is it only affecting iPhone 14 pro units?

Apple support had me reset my device using iTunes to get a new copy of iOS. I also set it up as new without my back up for 3 days (major inconvenience) to make sure it’s not my data. The issue still persisted. Apple replaced my device with a brand new retail box unit, which still has this bug! This has been the most frustrating situation and I can’t keep replacing units. Also, restarting the phone every few hours isn’t a solution. This seems like a RAM management issue and needs to be acknowledged and address by Apple.

If anyone has figured out a solution please help.

Apple, please address this ASAP.

My reply has also been removed for some reason. Yes I would love to be more optimistic about 16.1.1 as well. I kind of lost hope based on my experience so far and everything I have tried with Apple. I had the same hope for 16.1 when it came out, it felt snappier and the issue was gone for 2 days until…it finally came back and the phone became more sluggish as well on top of the main lagging / stuttering issues in the app switcher.

I am not sure if you noticed as well, but when the lagging happens, it also affects response time on the lock screen. When you go to the lock screen and tap to change the wallpaper, it takes like 3 seconds to respond, I guess it stems from the same lag issues. If you then press it again, it responds right away.

Hello everyone, yeah this happens to me too… brand new iPhone 14 Pro Max and I have this problem too.

I also noticed a very big problem in the post processing when taking pictures, it is too aggressive.

Wasted 1600€ to upgrade the iphone and instead I paid to downgrade… this was not happening in my old i11pro.

Apple needs to fix this situation as soon as possible.

I want to add that I’ve been dealing with this issue since Day 1 and thus far have been offered no solution. Took it into Apple Store, and showed them screen recordings of it happening and they sent it for repairs and they did a restore that seemed to have fixed it but it’s back and seems to get worse by the day.

has anyone been able to get a replacement phone from Apple?

This is just ridiculous! I’m glad to know it’s not just me with this problem. Brand new phone and won’t work!!! Why hasn’t Apple fixed this? I am not paying this much money for a phone that doesn’t work. @Apple this needs fixed or we should get a refund! I don’t want a replacement as this seems to be a problem on all iPhone 14 pro max devices. I switched to Apple 3 years ago and as they obviously don’t care that they don’t work(they’re still getting paid) I will not buy another. These phones are already too expensive but then to not work! Back to android for me!!!!!

I have not noticed any UI stutters, but I have noticed Audio stutters when switching apps and interacting with them. I would describe the stutter as a half second of audio skipping.

I have tested this on;

iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and an iPad 10.5 - all running iOS 16, all which aren’t exhibiting the problem.

I am running iOS 16.4.1, and have had these issues from new. May be an issue that was overseen by Apple?

Another one to add to the list. Everything is stuttering on my 14 pro max from brand new out of the box. UI, scrolling in 3rd party apps is really jumpy and stuttery, most native apps also stutter when scrolling. The really odd thing is only Safari is beautifully smooth, very rarely see any glitches on that.

Even more annoying is my iPad Pro M1 11” is exactly the same. So either iOS 16 is just not working properly on some devices. I never had any issues this bad before 16

Update:

I have narrowed the audio stutter down to the Amazon Shopping App.

If I have audio playing, and then open the Amazon Shopping App, the audio stutters. I was able to recreate this issue on wide range of IOS devices.

I’d have to say that in my example; that this is a fault of the app, and not Apple.

As for other stutters, let’s hope Apple can update the kernel/drivers on the next iOS version to resolve them.
