iPhone 14 Pro Max app switcher stutter / lag (Widespread!)

I have been dealing with what now seems to be a widespread issue on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. When in the app switcher, there is a horrible stutter/lag while swiping on an app to go back to the home page. This happens randomly but on all apps, both Apple and third party. Restarting the device will ‘fix’ the issue for a couple of hours, before it starts happening again. The longer the phone is running without a restart, the worse it gets and the stutter will happen every single time, other functions will start to be slow / laggy as well.

This is specific to iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max units, reported by many users on different forums and Reddit threads. This DOES NOT happen on my iPhone 13 Pro Max on the same iOS version (16.1) with the same back up and data, which makes it clear that it’s specific to iPhone 14 Pros and possibly a hardware issue!?

I also don’t believe it’s related to iOS 16 as some people noted, otherwise more iPhone models would be affected.

If it’s software related, why is it only affecting iPhone 14 pro units?

Apple support had me reset my device using iTunes to get a new copy of iOS. I also set it up as new without my back up for 3 days (major inconvenience) to make sure it’s not my data. The issue still persisted. Apple replaced my device with a brand new retail box unit, which still has this bug! This has been the most frustrating situation and I can’t keep replacing units. Also, restarting the phone every few hours isn’t a solution. This seems like a RAM management issue and needs to be acknowledged and address by Apple.

If anyone has figured out a solution please help.

Apple, please address this ASAP.

My reply has also been removed for some reason. Yes I would love to be more optimistic about 16.1.1 as well. I kind of lost hope based on my experience so far and everything I have tried with Apple. I had the same hope for 16.1 when it came out, it felt snappier and the issue was gone for 2 days until…it finally came back and the phone became more sluggish as well on top of the main lagging / stuttering issues in the app switcher.

I am not sure if you noticed as well, but when the lagging happens, it also affects response time on the lock screen. When you go to the lock screen and tap to change the wallpaper, it takes like 3 seconds to respond, I guess it stems from the same lag issues. If you then press it again, it responds right away.

There may be several reasons why an iPhone may behave as described by you. Some of them could be...

  1. Storage space on your device could be an issue --> How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
  2. Water / Liquid entry into the iPhone---> Important safety information for iPhone - Apple Support
  3. Overheating due to exposure to temperatures beyond -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). especially in the car because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range -- Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable ...
  4. Service of an iPhone by an un-authorised service personnel/agency/store
  5. Modification / Alteration of an iPhone by a third-party vendor
  6. iPhone is Jailbroken

Yeah, it’s so frustrating. Everything you’ve mentioned is happening to me. The lock screen lag is especially annoying. Just cheapens the entire experience.

I’m happy someone else is acknowledging it and it’s not just my device, I’ve seen nothing from any YouTube reviewers.

I’m going to be really disappointed if the lag starts up again tomorrow because we’ll just be hoping for a fix in December with 16.2.

I hear you. Thousands of users have already acknowledged across many different forums and threads that I have found online, including Apple employees at my local Apple Store. Let’s hope it gets address sooner rather than later. By the way, if this was fixed in 16.1.1 it would have been a part of the version notes and known issues that have been fixed. Sadly, It’s not.

I’m not sure where all my other responses went but I am cautiously optimistic about 16.1.1, key word is cautiously. I’m aware restarting temporarily fixes the issue (also aware an update restarts the phone). I’m just saying 16.1.1 feels a bit snappier than previous releases and betas. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

The 16.2 betas may not incorporate this bug fix yet if it is actually fixed.

Hello everyone, quick update. A couple of days ago I updated to 16.1.2. That has helped tremendously. With the previous update I experienced stutter/lag etc. I’ve not experienced any problems since updating to the latest software. Hopefully, this is helpful advice. Finally my phone is operating the way a brand new device should. I’m still keeping an eye out to make sure those problems doesn’t present again🤞🏾

I’m so glad I came across this because this same bug has been driving me insane. Everything you wrote is exactly what I’m experiencing. I too had my phone restored to factory settings and started from new twice and nothing happened. I finally demanded a new phone with the hopes that it was a hardware issue and the bug is still there. Apple, please look into this!

You can do the following steps and 100 % percent will solve this issue:

1- Close all apps

2- Update the iPhone to latest update currently 16.1.2

3- Hard reset your iPhone (Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Press and hold the side button. When the Apple logo appears, release the side button).
