My iPhone won't charge on my Macbook after updating to MacOS Ventura

Hi, I am using a Macbook Air M1 2020. I recently updated my Mac to MacOS Ventura.

I noticed that when I plug my iPhone XR to my Mac, the battery indicator on my iPhone shows it's charging but the battery percentage remains the same throughout the charging course. I tested with my Airpods case and face the same issue.

Anyone facing this same issue after updating to MacOS Ventura?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 13.0

Until a patch is released, I have found a temporary workaround for myself. I have an iPhone XR and a 2019 Macbook Pro with touchbar. When I connect my iPhone to my Macbook using a USB-C to Lightning cable, it doesn't charge of course.

However, if I:

1) Connect the iPhone to the Macbook Pro using a USB-C to lightning cable

2) Hard reboot the iPhone by holding down the power button and volume button

3) Unlock the iPhone when it reboots back up, leaving it connected to the Macbook Pro during this entire process

...my iPhone will begin to charge from my Macbook Pro.

Hopefully they fix this with a patch soon since it's obviously a software issues, but the above is working for me in the meantime.

The latest updates definitely do not fix the problem. I can understand why some people might think it fixes the problem. After you do a fresh reboot of your phone, the next time you connect it will definitely charge. But that is a once off situation. You still need to continue to hard restart your iPhone 10 before plugging it into the laptop every time you want to use it and keep it charged while you are using it.

I was a huge apple fan for years. For many years, the idea that "Everything just works" really was true at Apple, it appeared there used to be a real genuine concern at Apple to make sure everything was smooth and polished. Today, it really does seem now that Apple is more interested in profit above all else. If a software or firmware bug is introduced into a product, Apple no longer cares about the users that experience this bug, unless the problem is significant enough that it might financially impact them. This is Harvard ivy league thinking applied to business, it is a corrupt disease that has infected Apple. They treat their end users with contempt. I believe my next laptop and phone (for the first time in 15 years) will not be Apple users.

I am having the same problem. When my 2019 MacBook Pro is on battery and/or Power, my iPhone Xs Max wont charge on Ventura. It means that my iPhone runs out of power about lunch. I try plugging/unplugging the phone and it makes no difference. When the phone is plugged in it shows the lightning power icon, but about 80% of the time it does not charge.

The (original authentic) cable is fine, it worked before upgrading to Ventura, and it works on the original authentic power block.

I wonder if they have crippled charging the iPhone 10's to force us to upgrade? Perhaps it's just a bug in their update on the iPhone 10, but either way, it has degraded my ability to use the phone properly. I now have to unplug my phone from my laptop several times per day just to charge it. This is ridiculous. In the past I could just leave it plugged in all day and not worry about the battery going flat.

Here are the things I have already tried and already checked:

  • I have updated my iPhone to the latest iOS
  • I have purchased a brand new Apple brand USB-C to Lightning cable connecting my Macbook Pro to my phone
  • I have purchased a brand new Apple brand USB-C ot USB-C cable to connect my Macbook Pro to wall charger
  • I have cleaned the ports on both the Macbook Pro and the iPhone
  • I have tried plugging the iPhone into each of the 4 different USB-C ports on the MacBook Pro
  • I have force quit all apps on the iPhone, in order to rule out the possibility that the iPhone is using as much or more power as is being provided by the charging cable
  • I have tested charging the iPhone using a normal wall outlet charger, and it charges perfectly normally
  • The Macbook Pro has continued to charge normally this entire time
  • I have monitored the internal temperature of the MacBook Pro to ensure it is not excessively hot and therefore turning off charging functionality to the iPhone.
  • On the Macbook Pro, I have tried both selecting and deselecting the "Manage battery longevity" option
