Apple Pencil fix coming to new M2 iPad Pro? Display BUG

I’ve tried two different 12.9 inch M2 iPad Pros, with different apple pencils, and getting pretty terrible ink drawing especially on 3rd party apps.

Writing on OneNote and PDF expert on my old 2018 iPad Pro looked fantastic. On the new models, handwriting looks choppy and is inking without the pencil touching the screen, so getting weird tails at the end of letters.

Is this a known bug? Will this be fixed in future iPadOS updates?

Perhaps sensitivity is set at the wrong point (too high) going from “Hover” mode into drawing mode, with the new screens?

Hi guys, I updated my 12.9 inch M2 iPad Pro to iPadOS 16.two b**a three (apple forbids me to mention the b word) and I can confirm the handwriting issue with apple pencil is FINALLY FIXED and it works perfectly fine now even with hover feature turned on on both apple notes and third party note taking apps. It is a very stable system as far as I can tell and I haven’t run into any issues with apps like Notability and GoodNotes 5. If this is an urgent issue that needed to be fixed ASAP for you, I recommend updating to this b**a immediately

The new M2 models of iPad have the new “hover” feature - which can detect presence of the Pencil before touching the screen. Tip detection is reportedly up to 12mm above the screen - and this may impact your drawing/writing technique.

At present, “hover” is permanently enabled on supported models of iPad Pro. The behaviour of this feature will be determined by Apps.

Given that the M2 iPad Pro models are so new, it is quite feasible that you may encounter early model-specific issues - which with be ironed out quite quickly.

I've noticed the same issues... upgraded from a 2018 11" iPad Pro to a M2 11" iPad Pro and the Pencil sensitivity is much different. I can't seem to write neatly no matter how slow I write or how hard I try. I've tried in both GoodNotes and Notability, same thing in both apps. I really hope this gets fixed in a future software update. The primary use of my iPad is taking notes.

decided to return it because it is not usable at the moment for what i need - writing notes on pdf for school.

will call or chat apple about it after my exams :\ they need to fix this asap.

im surprised:

1) they did test the device? probably not? this should be very obvious issue.

2) it is actually a big issue since pencil is for writing right? why is this issue not fixed yet? (i mean it has been more than a week since released. i guess not "much" people buy ipad pro unlike iphones..)

Thanks for responding, LotusPilot! While I understand that the new hover feature is utilized by some apps, the behavior I’m describing is more like a hover “bug”. The apps I’m describing do not use any hover features, but their behavior is impacted (negatively) on the new M2 devices.

Presumably, Apple did not intend for the screen to start registering the Apple Pencil as touching when still 0.5-1mm away as part of “Hover.“ What I’m wondering is, is this oversensitivity to the pencil something that Apple can or will fix in future versions of the OS? So that it doesn’t start drawing in apps until the pencil is actually touching the screen?

Until that happens (or, if that can’t happen) the current default sensitivity to the pencil on the new M2 pro displays makes this a step down from the technology of 5 years ago.
