Updated to Ventura and now iCloud drive put desktop folder to sync directly

After updating to Ventura, iCloud Drive put my desktop folder to sync directly. There is no way to pause it, even when I am using tethering (implying limited bandwidth). When I try to deactivate, and choose no backup, Mac deleted all my files on my desktop, even when they were created before Mac automatically start syncing this folder.


Also this comes with all the notification telling me to spend more money on iCloud storage. In my use case it is all chaos and no benefit.

After disabling iCloud Drive you'll need to manually move your files back to your Desktop folder:


What happens when you turn off iCloud Drive or sign out of iCloud

If you turn off iCloud Drive or sign out of iCloud, a new Desktop and Documents folder is created in your home folder. You also have the option to keep a local copy of your files that are in iCloud Drive. If you keep a local copy of your files in iCloud Drive, they're copied to a folder called iCloud Drive (Archive) in your home folder. You can move any files that were in your iCloud Desktop and Documents to your new local Desktop and Documents.

Hopefully that puts you on the path to reinstating your Desktop items.

yes. Thank you! It is just the automatic change is a bit annoying, especially when bandwidth is limited (like on hotspot). and it would be nice if it could be paused (instead of turn off and delete everything) when needed, like google drive, dropbox, and all the other backup, cloud based storage systems.
