Permissions for external hard drive

I have a Mac Book Pro 2020 and the permissions for my external hard drive says read only. Not sure if that means anything but I can no longer save anything to the external hard drive. Any ideas ?

If you used a tool to enable macOS to write to NTFS volumes but it stopped working, check if there's a newer version of it available, or for other problems with it. Otherwise, try running the Disk Utility's First Aid function on it.

This may happen if a drive has sensed that it's about to fail.
