message app not showing badges from non iphones

So I’ve noticed that from the latest ios 15 to the newest ios16 my message app no longer seems to show badges from messages sent from people who don’t have an iphone for some reason. At first thought it was simply an issue with all messages but then noticed I’d see the badge from people i know who have iphones, but not from those that don’t. Is this intentional? If so why?

First, you need to understand the type of messages.

iPhone to iPhone - iMessage (Blue), internet required. Not chargeable. If no internet it will be sent as an SMS (Green).

Android to iPhone - Only SMS (Green), No internet required either to send or receive. Carrier will charge for each SMS based on your plan with them.
