Podcast speed keeps changing when iPhone is in my pocket

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max with the latest iOS. I like to listen to podcasts while doing yard work, which means my iPhone is in my pants pocket and I listen using Apple earphones with a Lightning connection.

I listen to most podcasts at 1.75x speed. Today the speed must have switched to 0.75x speed at least 40 times in a couple of hours. Often it would happen when I bent over. Before putting the phone in my pocket I turned the display off so that the various controls wouldn't be accidentally touched. I had to keep stopping what I was doing, take the phone out of my pocket, put it back to 1.75x speed, turn off the screen and put it back in my pocket. I eventually gave up and stopped listening entirely.

I also notice that other apps randomly open on my phone when it is in my pocket.

Is there any way to stop podcasts from randomly changing speeds?

Thanks.

Hi JohnHHale,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities! Does the behavior continue when its not in your pocket? Your leg may be tapping the screen. Check to see if you have Raise to Wake enabled. Disabling this setting can avoid the screen from turning on unless you press the side button.

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap Display & Brightness
  3. Change Raise to Wake setting

-Wake and unlock iPhone

If that's off and the behavior persists even when not in your pocket, we suggest ensuring your software is updated to the latest version. Restarting your device can also resolve many issues.

Update your iPhone or iPad

Restart your iPhone

Cheers!

Thanks, I'll give this a try. I was hoping there might be some way to "lock" a podcast (or music) so that it can't be inadvertently skipped, fast-forwarded, turned down etc. This sounds like an okay work-around, but I'll have to remember to undo it when my phone isn't in my pocket.

It only happens when the phone is in my (pants) pocket, so I don't think it's happening because the phone is being raised. I'll try your suggestion next time I'm doing outdoor work.
