Shortcut keys in pages

Hi everyone. After searching here I still cannot resolve an issue. I'm writing a script in Pages, and I have created paragraph styles for dialogue, character, action etc. I've assigned shortcut keys to these styles, and I've read here that one hits the Fn key plus the shortcut key F1, F2 etc. and that should work, but it doesn't. I've gone into keyboard formatting and tried to do the same for only the Pages app, but that also doesn't work--and I've saved a template called "script" with the paragraph styles/shortcuts, but when I try a new document with the template, it's a no go. Does anyone know how to address this issue? I'm on a brand new MacBook Air with the latest OS (Ventura). Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

In the macOS Settings panel, select Keyboard in the scrolling left icon list. Then, in the Press fn key to Start Dictation section, click the button Keyboard Shortcuts… and you will be met with another long scrollable list. Select Function Keys, and slide Use F1, F2, etc. to on with a blue indicator. Now you can get out of this heinous settings implementation, and in Pages, your related F1 - F8 shortcut assignments should work by directly pressing F1 - F8.

Before I made this change in Ventura Settings, Pages v12.2 would not respond to either F1 or fn + F1.

Here is the flow of selections in Ventura Settings:

Someone on the Pages product design team should have their head examined as this is neither user friendly nor productive. Four disjoint steps in Ventura that took two clicks on Monterey and previous releases.

If you need any of the special key features shared with these function keys, then use the fn key on the Air.
