iPhone 13 (iOS 16.1) Strange WiFi calling behaviour in airplane mode (Video Attached)

Hi all,

Aim: Getting Jio WiFi and Airtel WiFi to work in Airplane mode.

I have done the following test -

#Jio WiFi and Airtel WiFi

#Broadband is Airtel Extreme Fiber.

The steps are -

  1. Ensure WiFi calling is enabled and available.
  2. Make a call, and turn on airplane mode.
  3. WiFi call takes over and the call continues.
  4. Accept the call, call continues.
  5. Disconnect the call from the other phone, immediately the “Jio WiFi/Airtel WiFi” goes off.
  6. You can no longer make a call (asks to disable airplane mode).
  7. Disable airplane mode, both Jio WiFi and Airtel WiFi comes back.

Can some one else confirm if they too see this behaviour?

If so, is this a bug in iOS or is it something being done by Airtel/Jio?

I suspect this to be a bug coz, if Jio/Airtel was blocking this, the automatic takeover in airplane mode would not have happened.

While playing around (still on iOS 16.1.1), I discovered that "Network Reset" is not needed. It works the first time after a reboot. Simply turn off your iPhone (ensure you are not on Airplane mode while turning it off). Turn it back again. Wait for the phone to detect network (Cellular and WiFi). Turn on Airplane mode. It works fine. Both Jio and Airtel WiFi calling works. I am using this hack for now. Let's see when this gets fixed, if at all.

Meanwhile, Jio in their website has mentioned that WiFi calling doesn't work in Airplane mode, like really Jio? So for the past 48 hours that I using Jio WiFi calling on Airplane mode is "Pure Magic" ?

Too much incompetence everywhere.

To make matters worse, Jio mentions that WiFi calling in airplane mode works in their "Postpaid" connections. https://www.jio.com/help/faq/mobile/international-services/postpaid-ir-wi-fi-calling/can-i-use-wi-fi-calling-while-in-airplane-mode-under-jio-postpaid-plans#/

Like really Jio, so users who were / are using it in Prepaid is some kind of "black magic" ?

It works just for the first time after reseting network setting after that it doesn't work. Re updated ios 16 still didn’t worked for me. It’s software issue i’m 100% sure but the problem is not everyone use wifi calling on airplane mode so there is not much people who can see this problem. When i downgraded ios 15.7 it was working. So it’s a software issue.

I have been using the same on iOS 15.7. Ever since updating to iOS 16, iOS 16.1 to be precise, I have started facing this. Even on iOS 16.1.1, after doing a network reset, I am able to use Jio and Airtel WiFi calling in airplane mode.

However, after I disable the airplane mode and re-enable it, it doesn't work any more.

Therefore, I am quite sure the carriers (Jio & Airtel) supports it.

Could you please check if the steps mentioned below works for you :

a. Do a network reset (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

b. Once the phone restarts, set up your wifi, data & call preferences.

c. Go to Settings > Mobile Data > [Carrier (Airtel/Jio)] > Wifi Calling > Enable.

d. Wait for WiFi calling symbol to appear (Airtel WiFi/Jio WiFi) - Ensure you are connected to WiFi.

e. Enable Airplane mode.

f. Everything, including WiFi should get disabled now.

g. Enable WiFi.

After doing the above steps, I am able to get the WiFi calling for both Jio and Airtel, both call and sms works.

Caveat is, it works just for the first time. Now if you disable airplane mode and turn it back on, you will not be able to use WiFi calling.

Let me know if the above works for you!

Hello priyabratac,

You may wish to try the following steps from the "Get help" section here, as they may help with Wi-Fi Calling issues: Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling

Get help
If you can't turn on or use Wi-Fi Calling, make sure that your carrier offers Wi-Fi Calling and that your devices have the latest software. Then, follow these steps if you can't turn on Wi-Fi Calling or make a Wi-Fi call. Wait two minutes before you go from one step to the next.
1. Go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling and make sure that Wi-Fi Calling is on.
2. Restart your iPhone.
3. Connect to a different Wi-Fi network. Not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi-Fi Calling.
4. Turn Wi-Fi Calling off and then on again.
5. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset, and tap Reset Network Settings.

This page will also help provide some helpful info for the topic: Make calls using Wi-Fi on iPhone

Note: If the Wi-Fi connection is lost when you make calls, calls switch automatically to your carrier’s cellular network using VoLTE (Voice over LTE), if available and turned on. See View or change cellular data settings on iPhone. (VoLTE calls also switch to Wi-Fi when a Wi-Fi connection becomes available.) Contact your carrier for feature availability.

Cheers.

Exactly. I am fed up speaking with Apple Customer support. It feels we are speaking with a person who knows nothing about any of our problems. They have a scripted solution solution and they will repeat it to you no matter what problem you are having. Youtube offers better support than an Apple customer support it feels. I am an apple user for long but this issue always disappoints me. Dear Apple I love your products but please improve the support mechanisms
