Whatsapp Badge Disappears When Unread Messages Still Remain

This has been asked before but never resolved. It may be a Whatsapp or Apple problem, of course.

Is there a way to keep the Whatsapp badge showing on the Whatsapp icon

on an iphone when you've opened messages from one chat but there are

still messages unread from other chats? Having read messages in one chat, I don't necessarily want to read other chats' messages right then, but I would like the badge count of other unread messages to remain as a reminder. Thanks.

This problem has persisted for a number of years. Currently iPhone 14 Pro iOS16
