Most Apps Load Slowly After Update to Ventura

Most (but not all) applications on my MacBook Pro take 2-5 minutes to fully load before I can use them. They open up quickly but then hang for a while before they are functional. For example, I click the Chrome icon from my dock and it quickly opens, but I can't get a webpage to load for several minutes. Once it loads the first page, it functions perfectly normally until I quit and re-open it. Zoom does something similar. It opens right up but then hangs on the login page with the spinning pinwheel for several minutes before it logs in and runs. It then functions normally until I quit. Even some native apps like Quicktime and the Audio MIDI Setup app do the same thing. Meanwhile, other applications like Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Teams have no issues at all.

I've tried turning off wifi and that has no effect.

I've booted into Safe Mode and this problem does NOT occur.

I believe the issue started after updating to Ventura. I am on the most recent release (13.0.1) and all applications mentioned above are up-to-date.

I had already tried safe mode as I mentioned in the original post and the issue wasn't present then. I also tried another user account but the issue happened there as well. I had already gone through the login items - forgot to mention that in the original post.

I found the issue... Focusrite stopped supporting my audio interface a few years ago but it has continued to operate just fine. I didn't even consider that originally since the interface and associated software are still functioning. Unplugging it solves the problem so some (but not all) apps must be getting caught up by something to do with the interface while they're loading up. The good news is there is an easy workaround - unplug the interface, open the app(s), and plug it back in. The bad news is, I'm now in the market for a new interface....

For future reference for anyone who stumbles into this problem, it's a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 firewire interface.

that would leave me to believe that you have something installed on your user account that is causing the issue.

i'm thinking you should download and run the free version of EtreCheck so we can see if you have some software installed that is causing your issue. make sure you give "full disk access" to etrecheck. Learn how to use it by reading Using EtreCheck. if you need help interpreting the report, you can see how to post the report here by reading How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report. and it automatically obscures sensitive things (like serial numbers) so you don't have to worry about sharing the report here.

I see a large number of third party apps and Kernel extensions .

To trouble shoot further you can:

testing in a new user account would be telling.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

A Safeboot would be telling..

—SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Login and test. Reboot  as normal and test.  Caches get rebuilt automatically.

a  reboot will put it back to normal mode.

<System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.>

Wacom has been known to cause issues as well as:

google drive

one drive

dropbox

[Running] Google Drive (Google LLC - installed 2022-11-07)

Application

/Applications/Google Drive.app

[Running] OneDrive (Microsoft Corporation - installed 2022-11-17)

Application

/Applications/OneDrive.app

Kernel Extensions:

/Library/Extensions

[Not Loaded] dfsfuse.kext - com.google.drivefs.filesystems.dfsfuse (45.2 - SDK 10.16)

[Loaded] TACC.kext - com.techsmith.TACC (1.0.3 - SDK 10.10)

[Not Loaded] BJUSBLoad.kext - jp.co.canon.bj.print.BJUSBLoad (10.75.21 - SDK 10.8)

[Not Loaded] CIJUSBLoad.kext - jp.co.canon.ij.print.CIJUSBLoad (16.0.10 - SDK 10.9)

[Loaded] Saffire.kext - tc.tctechnologies.driver.Saffire (4.3.0 - SDK 10.8)

I would remove all login items, and launch as needed.

In Safeboot Mode —third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

this should be telling...

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus — and compare your results

all known to cause issues on the macOS

no insight or resolve—

you can good look at your System config. and reveal conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com
