Charging issues with new IOS 16.1.1

Just updated to 16.1.1 IOS using an XS. My battery health (original battery) is 84%. All was fine with the earlier IOS and charging a few days ago. But since the upgrade charging is super slow or not charging at times. It dropped from 84% to 38% the night I left it on the charger overnite so I was pretty unhappy to discover that! I am in Europe. I thought maybe it was the adapter (well thought of bought in the USA) interface causing issues. So yesterday I went and bought a new Euro 12W block for my iPhone to try. It is not charging the phone any faster than the original Apple lightening to USB cable to adapter to socket approach. But it is more reliable as occassionally the charging light would simply go out using the adapter. Even once this morn with the new APPLE charging block. However, now, four hours later, for the first time today the phone battery says it is at 91% charge using the Apple Charging Block. I did read things have to catch up after an IOS upgrade and can take a couple of days. Is that nonsense or perhaps happening? I did discover I cannot force start my phone, which I tried to do 4 or 5 times this morning. It never shuts off after tapping the volume up/volume down and then holding the right button to wait for the Apple log. I did turn off System Haptics. I did turn off the Optimize Battery Feature. I did turn off Background Apps Refresh and deleted some apps I no longer use. And I did buy a power block in case I'm out and my battery runs low quickly! Any other suggestions on this issue? I know I'm not the only one! Thank you.

YAY. Good morning. While so frustrating for several days process of elimination is a viable one. It was my Apple OEM cable that was faulty. I've used an older Apple OEM cable I had brought along too for backups that I finally found, am using my US 10W Apple OEM charging block and approved adapter into the EU socket...and ALL IS WELL at 100% consistently! YAYYY!!

What a good thanksgiving gift.

Thank you again Community and to you particularly for trouble shooting with me as you did!

Take good care all.

jliza ~ The long process of applying an iOS update to an old iPhone XS model with an unnoticed weak, original battery can be the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back." Also, your 84% max capacity can be misleading as it's only an algorithmic estimate of a dynamic chemical process. And others here have reported a battery "significantly degraded" alert at 89% max capacity!

...So, you can wait for suggestions from other users here, but I would have that aging, likely weak battery replaced:

Short answer of what worked for me: turn off Clean Energy Charging option under Battery Health & Charging (in battery settings).

Long winded answer below:

I have an iPhone 12 and recently updated to iOS 16.1.1 too and noticed when I placed my phone on my MagSafe Charger it wouldn’t charge. I did the usual checks - cable & charging block but nothing worked until I turned off Clean Energy Charging under Battery Health & Charging. Only then was I able to start charging. Reading up on it, sounds like the iPhone will selectively charge based on when lower carbon emissions electricity is available. I’m all for reducing carbon emissions but not at the expense of preventing charging my phone when I need it. I’m not sure if this was the root cause of me not charging my phone but after disabling this option, it now charges. Not sure if there’s a bug if you don’t allow all the required options to be enabled but this should not be on by default. Hope this helps others.

Hi there and for me after ruling everything else out that could be going wrong and even buying some good additional accessories and some unnecessary, it turned out for me my charging cable that was Apple OEM was having issues. I found an old but good one and the moment I plugged it in all my charging issues disappeared. And the endless stress that went on for about a week around that topic! I hope your issue resolves tho the battery did seem like it might need to be looked at/changed out if I recall your story about that aspect of things? Mine is 84% and even one of the threads here said it still might need a change out. I think you said your battery is showing a much lower status for the health of its charge? If I'm wrong on that, my apologies. I've read a lot of threads here and written plenty too! :).

Hey there jlizafromma,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. To get started, you've done some great troubleshooting steps on your own already. To help isolate the issue further, we'd recommend going through any step you haven't already tried in this link here: If your iPhone or iPod touch won't charge - Apple Support

If your device charges slowly or won’t charge
Follow these steps and try again after each:
1. Check your charging cable and USB adapter for signs of damage, like breakage or bent prongs. Don't use damaged accessories.
2. Use a wall power outlet and check for firm connections between your charging cable, USB wall adapter, and wall outlet or AC power cable, or try a different outlet.
3. Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device, then firmly plug your charging cable into your device. If the charging port is damaged, your device probably needs service.
4. Let your device charge for a half hour.
5. If your device is still unresponsive, force restart your device:
- iPhone 8 or later and iPhone SE (2nd generation): Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPod touch (7th generation): Press and hold both the side (or top) button and the volume down button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier, iPhone SE (1st generation), and iPod touch (6th generation) or earlier: Press and hold both the side (or top) button and the Home button until the Apple logo appears.
6. Let your device charge for another half hour.
7. If your device still won't power on or charge, take your device, charging cable, and charging adapter to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for evaluation. You can also contact Apple Support.

If still having issues after going through the steps above, have you noticed if your iPhone feels warm to the touch while charging? We ask because, if the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, it is possible that charging may stop or slow.

Take care!

BlueFil wrote: "The Maximum Capacity on my phone is 79% @Alancito. Before we conclude this is happening because of the battery, note that, as an example, my phone was at 1% charge; I inserted the charging cable, came back after 4 hours and it was still at 1%. I removed the cable, reinserted, and it charged up to 17%."

BlueFil ~ Your iPhone XS is displaying the classic symptoms of a weak, years-old original battery in need of replacement:

• Less than 80% maximum capacity

• Inconsistent ability to charge

• The long process of applying an iOS update to an old iPhone with a weak battery was the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back."

...So have the weak, original battery replaced and all will be well:

Bluefil,

While you consider getting a new battery replacement, have you tried a new charging cable? The weak point of a cable is at the cable to connector interface from connecting/disconnecting it from your phone. The connector wire strands are soldered to pads on the corresponding connector (internal to the cable/connector) and that is a weak point that could cause intermittent contact. These are fine gauge wires that easily become dislodged or break from the pads.

Hi Liza, the charging adapter block bought in the US should work fine in Europe and other parts of the world (there’s fine print on the block itself where it states ratings for Input (going into block from socket) & Output (going to device) for both current and voltage. The input should read 100-240V or similar, which is the AC voltage range the block can use (seeing this range means it can be used across different regions). I personally prefer Anker blocks/adapters but it’s personal preference.

Since your Mac charges fine using the same electrical socket, have you tried charging your iPhone using a cable plugged into your laptop (using Mac as your power source)? Another option would be to get a rechargeable battery brick (back up power) and try charging your phone using that with a USB cable.

Lastly, trying to troubleshoot the electrical wiring in an old building would be beyond the scope of your current issue unless you know how to use a digital multi-meter and are familiar with electrical wiring. Also, the power coming out of a socket in an older building in Europe (depending on where in the EU) may not be as “pure/clean” compared to the US but that’s a separate issue altogether.

Hope your Holidays are going well minus this charging issue.

I had this exact issue - iOS 16.1.1, iPhone 12, mag safe stopped charging after about 30 seconds. Changed battery power settings like above, but then the problem continued. I am attempting to upgrade to iOS 16.1.2 right now. Also, if I charge from the USB-C/thunderbolt jack on the phone it does charge successfully. I tried rebooting the phone and no luck. As of right now I cannot charge from my iPhone 12 magsafe charger. This problem started only about 2 days ago for me (~12/2/22) out of the blue.

I appreciate the input. My phone just abruptly stops charging even while my laptop and iWatch using the same power adapter do fine?? If I plug the phone into the socket directly with a Euro purchased brand new OEM Apple 12W charging block it takes a very long time to charge even 20ish percent. :( And often it stops charging along the way. Only do I find that out when I look occassionally and realize the green charging light is off. Now I make sure the phone is as fully charged as it can be before going to sleep at night and turn it off. I do not leave it on as I discovered right after I did the 16.1.1 update it drained my battery from 84% to 38% overnite.

None of this was happening on the earlier IOS..The phone was charging just fine.

I seem to have two choices. To replace the battery as Alancito suggested. The battery health says it is at 84% capacity now. There is an Apple approved store I could go to here in the city for that.

The other idea is to somehow to test the voltage of the socket which could be the biggest culprit. Seems I could also buy a small USB device used as a "back-up generator" on that socket?? Weirdly that same socket does charge my Apple 2020 Mac and my iWatch with no issues I am aware of or see. But if I use that socket for the phone only using the brand new EU 12W Apple Charging Block the phone doesn't always get much power...or any. Just now it was stuck at 79%. To get it to 82% with that direct connection to that socket has given the phone battery 3% more in about 15 or 20 minutes.

I don't think the power in this old building is steady even if oddly enough to bring my Apple Mac laptop back to full 100% in about 45-60 minutes and same for my iWatch even when it is at less than 10% power. ????

So strange! More thoughts? Fixes?

Thanks again, and hope you're having a nice holiday.

Liza.
