my what’s app back up is stuck on preparing for a week now. I have checked the iCloud and storage space, toggled the what’s app on iCloud off then on again, reset network settings etc but nothing works. I have more than enough space left too as I’m on 200gb
iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 16
Just spent an hour on the phone with Apple 2nd Level Support (very helpful guy). Went through multiple potential solutions including logging out/in iCloud, deleting WhatsApp data from iCloud, deleting/reinstalling WhatsApp, Network Reset, etc. etc. Nothing resolved issue and they suggested to contact WhatsApp support (and gave personal contact details of Apple technician to contact again if not resolved). The forced-close manual back-up technique does work each time it's done, however, I want auto back-up functionality. Have contacted WhatsApp Support as suggested. Let's see how this plays out.
Yeah the back up started working again I think a day before 16.3 was released. Hope that is the same for all who had this problem!
Have exactly same problem. WhatsApp Manual backup (Back Up Now) to iCloud was working fine one (or few) week ago - probably iOS 16.1 on that time, maybe not.
Cleared most WhatsApp items, backup size very small. Plenty of iCloud space left. Deleted old iCloud backups. Logoff-Login iCloud. Lot of info around web what to try, done all - nothing help.
Cannot swap new phone as usual - driving nuts 🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜

iOS 16.1.2 updated - still same problem!
Noticed one new thing, if help anyone, when turn all network connection OFF and try same WhatsApp Manual backup (Back Up Now) - it looks identical behaviour "Preparing...." even no network access to iCloud, so perhaps not network setting-related and instead local App / temp file issue...
No, I'm not going to reinstall WhatsApp without backup.
Thanks everyone for your help but still no luck. The problem only started once I updated to iOS 16.1.1. It hasn’t changed even when I updated to iOS 16.1.2
if anyone does know of a solution in the future, please do let me know.
Worked for me also, I will try it again tomorrow.
I had already 2 other workarounds but they only worked one time, so hope this one works more times 🙂
still does not fix the issue of automatic backups but at least it is something!
Worked for me on the second attempt after trying literally everything … thank you, not sure if it will work tomorrow but at least I have a backup now … I suppose we can’t complain as it’s a free app but it’s disappointing the developers haven’t fixed the issue …
Yes i was very concern about backup. Thought it might be the issue with me only but now it’s clear that issue in application. Well i tried this method and it works fine in 3rd or 4th attempt. I tried before deleting all old backup for phone and whatsapp but none of it works.

Thank you. All of the above is checked and actioned but still nothing. It’s not a new phone. I have cleared everything but still not working.
My wife and I both have this problem, only started after updating to IOS 16.1.2. Talked to Apple support and done all the suggested fixes but no change

Weird thing is my WhatsApp finally backed up after 11 days from previous backup (set for weekly)when it was plugged in yesterday morning. But my wife’s still won’t, even when plugged in?
Installed 16.2 a few days ago. Still not working for us
