Have you tried restarting the computer? Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Ok took a while but discovered messenger was looking for the admin pw used to unlock computer, at least when I tried it, it worked

However I appear to have another issue, a host of apps, many of which i have never heard of are asking for a pw, popping up out of the blue. I've been looking at the keychain access and checking different boxes but his has not resolved the issue, I don't want unfamiliar apps popping up. any advice on how to handle this?

  1. In the Keychain Access app on your Mac, click “login” in the Keychains list.
  2. Choose Edit > Change Settings for Keychain “login.”
  3. Select the “Lock after” checkbox, then enter a number of minutes.
  4. If you want to require a password each time the computer goes to sleep, select the “Lock when sleeping” checkbox.
  5. Click Save.

I followed this procedure in keychain, allowed me to view pw, but when copied/pasted in pw box, it was rejected

OK tried quitting AVG, appears it is connected to VPN? In any event I was able to retrieve a pw on keychain access as long as my arm. when I tried pasting it in the pw box of messenger desktop.v1, the system rejected it, Making progress but still not where should be.

I'm not sure about setting up another admin acct, kind of worried I might mess things up even worse, how difficult is it and can I back out of it if I need to?

OK I have keychain access on the screen, looking at certificate assistant, "viewing and evaluating certificates" Right now the generic certificate (certificate chain validation only) box is checked.

I have choices of S/MIME, SSL and code signing choices in addition to Generic. should I check one of these to stop all the apps requesting keychain access pw?
