Extremely slow file transfer speeds on OS Ventura

Transfer speeds on OS Ventura are starting to make my Mac Studio unusable. Transferring 300GB from one external USB SSD drive to another is expected to take 2 days!? And that was after spending an hour stuck on "Preparing to Copy".

I'm not the only one either, see threads [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6].

Anyone experiencing this issue please report to https://apple.com/feedback or by using the Feedback Assistant app. The more data they have the quicker it will get fixed.

I was able to "solve" it by disabling Spotlight search on the specific external drive. Settings > Siri and Spotlight > Privacy > Add the external drive to the list to disable Spotlight indexing.

Takes a few minutes to kick in and then copy speed goes back to pre-Ventura days.

Wow, this is the first narky comment I’ve seen on this forum, congratulations.

I’m here to direct others experiencing the same problem to Apple’s Feedback system so their engineers have as much data as possible when fixing the problem in the next OS update. This is at the request of Apple. The number of responses I’ve received has been nothing but satisfying, but thanks for your concern.

If you care to read any of the forums I’ve posted above, people have had similar experiences with drives formatted in other than exFAT. What’s more, video recording devices I use with these drives require exFAT.

Stop telling people their needs are invalid, or that turning to forums to encourage others to report the problem to Apple is not a valid way to fix a software bug.

That's because I'm not really trying to get the issue solved here, as no other thread has been resolved despite offering more information, nor do any of the suggestions resolve my issue.

Both are exFAT drives connected via the front USB-C (USB 3.2/10Gbps) ports of my M1 Max Mac Studio using tested, high-bitrate cables. But others in the threads linked in my original post have reported issues with NTFS as well. Besides, formatting the drive is absolutely out of the question because I need the data on them.

UPDATE: I've actually discovered it's only the Samsung T7 drives that have snail-pace read/write speeds. All three that I own consistently tested sub 100MB/s write speeds. However that would make a 300GB transfer 50 minutes, not 48 hours... So there's something seriously wrong with the way Ventura is communicating with the T7 controller.

One drive is a Samsung T7 SSD, capable of 1,000MB/s sequential read/write speeds, the other is a Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SSD SATA drive. Although this is also totally irrelevant, as I have the same issue transferring data with every hard drive I have tested, and even SD cards plugged straight into the Mac Studio. As have many others reporting this problem in threads linked in my original post.

Once again, none of us noticed this issue before updating to Ventura. Nothing else in my setup has changed.

To be clear the internal SSD reads/writes at around the expected 4,000-5,000 MB/s. This problem only exists with external media.

Hello all

I have to save the same file again to another USB.

188 days for 24 GB.

Before I started the copy I had to remove all the contains from the USB to HD. 2.4GB. It took 23 secs.

Then I started the new copy.

While I was writing this post. I when back to look. (about 5-10 mins had pasted)

The speed has increased and the time has decreased to less than 1 hr.

Looks to me like the system is doing an initial calculation and then once it gets over it it speeds up.

And now it's down to 43 mins.

I wanted to copy 24GB to my USB. 58 days were set as the time needed. It was just sitting there, a kb or so.

So I went to the utility disk. Erases the disk and set to Mac OS extended (journaled)

Didn't change much as it was already formatted as Mac OS.

Went to settings - Sir and spotlight. At the bottom Privacy. Then hit the + and then wait for the USB to turn up and choose.

Eject the USB, Insert the USB. Start the copy.

Now at 23 mins for 24GB. That's OK.

I had this issue with macOS 13.1 as well, however the macOS 13.2 update has fixed it for me today.

Benchmarks with Blackmagic Speedtest and a External Thunderbolt 3 enclosure with a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB:

macOS 12.x

Write - Read

2106MB/s - 2755MB/s

macOS 13.1

1186MB/s - 1675MB/s

macOS 13.2

2063MB/s - 2752MB/s

Improvements with my Samsung T7 SSD too.

Yeah, same here with the T7s. I've since discovered that it's only my Samsung T7s that are screwing up my transfer speeds. Seems to be happening on my M1 iPad too weirdly. I'm assuming it could be related to the T7's flash cache, which is causing Ventura to miscommunicate with the drive's controller.

You can test your drives by using the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. Make sure you select your external drive by first clicking the gear icon ⚙️ above 'Start' and then 'Select Target Drive'. You can submit a screenshot to Apple Feedback.

All I can do is copy and paste what I just said in the other thread...

No. This is a user-to-user support forum. If we can't reproduce the error, all we can do is direct you to one of:

Product Feedback - Apple - for general feedback, or

https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/ - to write a bug report. You may have to create a free developer account.

This kind of problem can be difficult. The general flow is always the same:

1) There is a change since installing (insert this year's operating system version here).

2) Ergo, there must be a bug in (version).

3) Me too!

4) Me too!, etc.

But at this point, it's a dead end. There is obviously no fundamental change in Ventura. Only a handful of people are reporting this problem. Possible causes are as follows:

1) Software conflict from some low-level system modification software

2) Hardware conflict from some other attached device

3) Hardware failure either internally or with the external device

I understand that this is not what anyone wants to hear. But I've seen this pattern repeated so many times, over so many years.

In most cases, people have no idea what low-level system modifications are installed and running. They also often only have vague ideas about what external hardware is connected. If you have specifics, you can post them. Maybe there is some common thread that would explain it.

You can try things like booting in safe mode. Or you can erase the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Then run your test again before reinstalling any 3rd party software. If you still have the problem, then it is definitely a hardware problem. You can can take the computer and the external to an Apple Store and maybe get it fixed (assuming the failure isn't in the external).

If you don't want to do any drastic debugging efforts like that, then your options are severely limited. You can submit bug reports. If 10 thousand people have similar problems and they submit bug reports too, then Apple engineers might look through your reports and see if they can identify any common threads. But don't get your hopes up on this. It virtually never happens. And if it does, it takes months or years.

I'm not trying to start any fights here. I'm just trying to set expectations.

You are not giving us much to work on.

This is of course not normal, and not something that all or most Mac Studio users are experiencing.

What drives are these? How are they formatted? How are they connected to your mac?

Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

I have two different Samsung T7 SSD Drives. I have many different SD cards, UHS-II versions, UHS I versions, speeds up to 300mbs for the cards, and 1000mbs for the Samsung SSD. Immediately after updating to venture, file transfer slowed tremendously. Even moving stuff to the trash takes forever and emptying the trash does not work in one swoop.
