Extremely slow file transfer speeds on OS Ventura

Transfer speeds on OS Ventura are starting to make my Mac Studio unusable. Transferring 300GB from one external USB SSD drive to another is expected to take 2 days!? And that was after spending an hour stuck on "Preparing to Copy".

I'm not the only one either, see threads [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6].

Anyone experiencing this issue please report to https://apple.com/feedback or by using the Feedback Assistant app. The more data they have the quicker it will get fixed.

I was able to "solve" it by disabling Spotlight search on the specific external drive. Settings > Siri and Spotlight > Privacy > Add the external drive to the list to disable Spotlight indexing.

Takes a few minutes to kick in and then copy speed goes back to pre-Ventura days.

Yes!

the speed of my T7 is feels even worst then what blackmagic says.

I also tried to talk with apple support by phone but they really didn't help and they wanted me to do stupid tests like format the drive ,I was certainly sured thats won't help.

its a bug of the macOS I really hope they will detect the problem and solve it for the next update.

its important to say that its only T7 problem and Sandisk works perfect.

That's because I'm not really trying to get the issue solved

Then you're in the wrong place. This is a user-to-user tech support forum for Apple products. If you are here for some other purpose, you are likely to be disappointed.

Both are exFAT drives...formatting the drive is absolutely out of the question because I need the data on them.

Well there goes that idea. To double-down on what I said above, if one of your restrictions is that you can't actually make any changes, then there is nothing anyone here can do for you.

Probably the only thing we can do is try to reproduce what you are seeing. I just happen to have a Samsung T7 that is not exFAT. I get about 650 MB/s on the Intel Ventura MBP, about what I would expect. My newer M1 MBP gets slightly faster speeds, but then it is also a faster machine.

And since we've already started with the personal attacks, I will add one more thing...

Probably the very worst thing you can do is assume that somewhere at Apple someone has seen this thread and has urgently dispatched software engineers to start working on a bug fix in Ventura. I can assure you that nothing of the sort has happened. It is extremely unlikely that anything of the sort will ever happen in the future.

If you sit on your hands, you will just get more and more frustrated. Like it or not, you are the one that is going to have to do the debugging on this. If you have data on externals that you can't erase, it will be your responsibility to copy that data somewhere else so that you can erase that drive and try a different format. If will be your responsibility to backup your computer, erase it, and try it again with a factory fresh installation.

I'm not saying this to be mean. I don't have the problem. Therefore, I can't help in any way.

You are free to keep using this thread for as long as you want. You can post whatever it is you want in it. You can demand Apple fix it. You can call me names. Whatever makes you feel best. Or you can get to work and start isolating the problem bit-by-bit. Only those people who have the problem can do this.

What are you talking about?

A senior Apple technician directed me to encourage people who are experiencing this problem to make a bug report. That is literally what this thread is doing.

Why are you starting fights and then getting butthurt when people call you out on it? I've never seen anyone be as rude as you for not using a forum in the exact way you would prefer. Totally bizarre behaviour, utterly tedious.

You didn't talk to any senior Apple technician. You talked to someone at Apple support. If your problem isn't described in some existing Apple support document, they are just going to kick you to the curb like this.

You want to know what's tedious? Dealing with responses like yours, time after time, year after year.

Never called you names.

I'll quote you - "Wow, this is the first narky comment I’ve seen on this forum, congratulations."

Please stop commenting here

Happy to do it. I've told you exactly what you need to do to get this problem fixed. You can do that if you want, but without me helping you. Or you can just sit on your hands, like so many before you, and hope a fix magically arrives one day. macOS 14 will be released in just about six months from now. If there ever is a fix, that is where you'll see it. Enjoy the wait.

Hi

May have a solution

I had the same slow transfer speeds for memory sticks since installing Ventura 13.0.1. My memory sticks were formatted to exFat (for moving files between a Mac and PC), I have just used the disk utility on my MBPPro (2017) and erased and reformatted the memory sticks to Mac OS Extended (Journal) and the transfer speeds are back up to normal.

NB Memory Sticks nothing special a couple of SanDisks 64GB and 128GB, one was a USB 2 with a USB C adapter the other was a dual USB C/USB 2 connection memory stick.

Hope this helps
