The Apple superDrive requires a whopping 900 milliAmps USB power. "regular" USB ports such as the ones on adapters typically provide 500 milliAmps, max.


Connect DIRECTLY to a USB port on the chassis, or with an "all wires" adapter from USB-C for best results.


You can examine the actual USB power Required and Available values at:


 menu > about This Mac > (system Report) > USB
