Ventura OS problems with scanning and emailing pdfs

Since I've downloaded Ventura, I can no longer scan, the scanner doesn't open. I tried to send emails with a pdf attachment (attachments were small), the receivers of my email with pdf's are unable to open the pdfs. To make sure that the pdf was not corrupt, I used a Mac still using Monterey to create and send the same pdf and the mail recipients had no problem opening the pdf attachment. This proves that there is some bug in Ventura OS that is having a problem with both scanning and sending pdfs. The scanner is a HP Officejet printer. On the Mac with the previous OS the open scanner works, but it does not work on my 2019 Macbook Pro. The open scanner button is greyed out. Apple needs to address this as in this day and age people scan and email pdfs for both personal and business purposes.

You can get scanning to work on Ventura 13.1 by adding a new printer.

When the box appears, just select the printer of the same name (in my case Brother MFC-7362N).

with (2) after name.

You will then be able to scan by selecting Open Scanner when you click on the new printer button,

You can also select the software for your printer in the "Add Printer" Box and select the appropriate software by going to "Use". this allows you to use your specific printer instead of "Auto Select".

I then deleted the original printer.

It is not up to Apple to fix other vendors software issues as there are virtually thousands of different apps out there. What Apple does is to publish OS specs to which vendors need to write their software. If you will bear with me, I will offer some things to consider which may be useful. Whenever we install an operating system upgrade or some OS updates, printers and scanners will often stop working. Then a new OS compliant software must be installed. Experience has shown that many printer/scanner manufacturers are very slow to provide updated software. What you can do is to thoroughly check the scanner vendor's web site for updated compliant software that works. If none is available, then you should ask when it will be released. If that doesn't work, you can try scanning using Apple's Image Capture app. It will scan, but is not full featured. Another alternative is to download and try the full featured scanner software from VueScan. You can try it for free. It will show a watermark until you purchase it. I bought it and can recommend it. I have no association with VueScan. Good luck.

Thank you Ronasara. I have been down this road before with other OS updates. What is interesting is that this is the first time a scanner issue and email issue sending pdfs has come up. I tested a document scanned on another Mac, let's call it the Old Mac. Mailed that document scanned on the Old Mac from both Macs. The email from the Old Mac was able to be opened and read by a friend. The pdf document emailed from my Mac was unable to be opened and read. So here we have a pdf which is now not functioning through Mac mail. Not everyone experiences these glitches. I have researched various problems thinking it was a problem from an new update as I have never had this problem before and I have had Macs for 20 years. What a find on Apple Support community is someone who had the same problem from years ago. There are no drivers listed to date for my HP Officejet 4500. Thank you again.

Thank you Karelli.

I thought I had it sorted by going to Add another printer & choosing the same printer labeled 2 and with bonjour in one of the boxes. This works only once, then the scanner dialogue box wont light up, just like before.

I will try your method and post if that works for me.

I still think that this is a Ventura 13.1 problem, but I'm no expert.

My printer & scanner worked perfectly well before I installed Ventura.

With respect (as your technical expertise is *clearly* light years ahead of mine) your answer above does not help much. Yes, of course there are thousands of apps, but printers are only made by half a dozen brands aren't they? And they are also particularly vital to most professional users. Is it necessary to change the OS parameters with specific regard to printers every system upgrade? Perhaps it is. I have just spent a fruitless hour searching for non-existent drivers and finding that I'm not not even allowed to ask HP for info as they bought out Samsung and now my old account is invalid. In specific cases I think apple could do substantially more with regard to the specs of certain generic peripherals such as printers. It's a vicious circle as the printer manufacturers are clearly not motivated to rush into providing support at every system upgrade, so all parties can (and do) walk away whistling 'not my problem' whilst we the consumers just have to fork out for new hardware. Gee thanks...
