The Best My External LG 5K monitor can do is only 4k - Why?

I have a Macbook Pro 14" M1 Pro 2021. I also have a LG 34WK95U-W connected to it via thunderbolt cable and it has been working great for the past year. I upgrade from Monterey to Ventura and then I noticed the best my 5120 x 2160 monitor could do was 4k.

  1. I downgraded to Monterey thinking that is what caused the issue but that did not help.
  2. I have tried different Thunderbolt cables thinking that my cable went bad, but that did help either.
  3. I tried to reset the NVRAM with instructions on how to do so on YouTube, but that didn't help
  4. I tried to connect via HDMI but that didn't help
  5. I tried all 3 USB-C ports on the MacBook to the LG monitor, but that didn't help.

Looking at Hardware > Graphics/Display properties it seems like my Macbook thinks my LG display is 3440x1440.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Solution!!!!

I can report a solution finally. After all the tests I listed above I knew the problem was with the LG monitor. I had tried this before with no success, but I tried it again, I reset the LG monitor to it's factory settings within it's onscreen menu. This test was after installing SwitchResX, now I can achieve full 5k resolution.

After a week of looking at a blurry screen, it seems like I just got a new pair of eyes!

Thanks again for everyone's help.

The Mac uses a system that reminds me of “Plug and play” to determine what display is connected, and what its capabilities are.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

These are the ONLY times when the screen resolution will be re-evaluated.

Maybe Apple support can help. The first responders have a script they follow. Once they have checked off all the boxes, they MAY try to tell you all is well. Instead, ask for a specialist to contact you, and do not give up until you get one of:

• This is a known problem, we are actively working on fixing -OR-

• I will file Bug Report on your behalf -OR-

• take your Mac to this Apple Store, and WE will instruct them to fix it for you.

I checked the 'current' tab about 5 times, I can not locate the 5k resolution in that list.

As for the LG display having a defect I took my wife's PC laptop and connected to the LG display via the USB-C cable I have been using and I could set the resolution to 5k no problem. That test also means the USB-C cable works fine as well.

Sure seems like an Apple issue.

Detect Displays says go ask all possible displays to reveal their names and resolutions. When a display does not display at all, that can make it active. or it can make it re-state its capabilities after internal changes.

what you are describring sounds like (identify displays) or (gather windows) which used to put a number up on each display, (or a red box in a different version). Then it would show settings of each display, transcribed onto the main display's window. I don't know whether that is still supported.

Thanks for reporting back, that is good news for you, as a result of your continued pressure against the machinery!

Editorial: is seems than additional complexity of both the controllers and the software that runs these high-end displays means they get confused FAR more often than older, simpler displays. The newest Apple display is a prime example where comparatively often, the display develops a problem and needs to be reset to solve the problem.

I also tried connecting my LG monitor to my daughters m1 macbook air and it also could not do 5k.

I tried two different thunderbolt cables that I know have worked with 5k in the past and it didn't help.

I am starting to think it might be a problem with my LG monitor. What is odd is I get a message from the monitor (see above pic) that it is not receiving the preferred 5k resolution.
