What do you mean by the "automatic photo selection"? Are you asking about the  'Lift subject from background", aka "Automatic Cutout"? This is working rather well for me on my iPhone 11 Pro Max - just tap the subject and hold, while Photos is isolating the subject, then copy it. Now you can paste it into any document or note. It will only work on images, where Photos could recognise the subject. When I try the same on my iPhone X with iOS 16, it does not work at all, even after installing the most recent update.

BTW, as your question is about the iPhone X, this would be better have been asked in the Photos iOS forum , not Photos for Mac. Photos for iOS - Apple Community

Hi Trojan_UA,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities! If Photos doesn't seem to be working as expected, we suggest ensuring the software is updated to the latest version:

  1. "Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.

The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.

5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now."

-Update your iPhone or iPad

Outdated software can cause things to misbehave. If it's updated, and a restart of your device and the Photos app doesn't help, we suggest contacting Apple Support to look into this behavior further with you.

Cheers!
