Apple Screen Time app limits not working

I’ve used screen time for my kids to limit time on certain apps. It worked well for years, but now I will set the limits and then they will suddenly disappear after a day or even less. Other settings also get erased including downtime and content restrictions. I have changed the passcode and the kids swear they have not tried to change any settings. This issue started about two months ago. I have updated iOS on all the devices. I have turned screen time off and set up settings again. I have tried setting the limits from my device as well as the individual devices. My kids will spend too much time on their phones without limitations in place and creates repeated bouts of anger for my wife. Please help!

Apple - You HAVE to fix this!!! This is a safety issue for children. I am pretty close to swapping my whole family to Android because I can't worry that my kids are getting into stuff online that they shouldn't. I know they are accessing things they shouldn't and I have no way of keeping them safe online unless this gets fixed or I just take away their phones. DO BETTER!!!

Same issue here.

Getting the message:

Screen Time for xxxxxx has not been available for 7 days. Make sure the device is connected to the internet and is signed into iCloud with xxxxxx's Apple ID.

(The child's phone is connected to the internet and signed into iCloud.)

It's very frustrating that Apple is providing no update or support for this.

It’s all of the devices. It won’t help until they push a fix after iOS 16.2.

1.) Update all devices (if needed)

2.) Turn off Screen Time on ALL devices

3.) Shut down all devices & wait a minute or 2

3.) Restart devices and enable Screen Time for each child

The above steps will usually fix any kink in Screen Time. The problem is that it broke in iOS 16 and has not been fixed as of iOS 16.2. It is now considered a known issue to Apple engineers. So I’ve been checking daily for updates. Good luck!

I experience the same issue. I followed all the steps from my Apple Support call, but 24hrs later it went back to wacky and remains broken after a week. Called Apple a second time, and again it seemed fixed for a day then returned to broken. This feature was legitimately broken by iOS 16. Apple, please patch this obvious error in your code or disable the feature altogether. Pretending that its a user issue is irresponsible. Waiting patiently for a fix🙏🏼

This worked for us with the exception of one thing:

Once we reset all devices and re-enabled Screen Time for the child devices, the app limits were still present. App Limits then disappeared after a day or so (as they have for months – root problem for us).

Custom App Limits were still there after basically a full screen time reset, which made me distrust their presence anyway so just recreated them after they disappeared. No problems for going on 4 days and Screen Time is no longer sluggish. I think we’re fixed.

Basically, I followed Gidgehe’s instructions. Only thing I’d change is this: If App Limits are present after you’ve reset all devices, delete them and re-create yourself.

Follow up on this:

After we ‘reset settings’ none of us were receiving texts to our AppleIDs. Also our two parent phones weren’t receiving requests via text (which Apple shoved down our throats without option).

I went into Settings-> Messages->iMessage and enabled the Send/Receive to AppleID (in addition to the phone number(s), which were present).

iMessages started working again. First Screen Time request came through and I approved of it. It didn’t work for the child device. She requested again. I approved again. This one worked but… APP LIMITS DISAPPEARED COMPLETELY for both kids a few minutes after that. Back to the drawing board for us.

Still broken.

Before I go to reset all of my kids’ phones and mine I just wanted to make sure this reset solution is working for everyone? I was so relieved to see that I wasn’t the only one going through this issue. And unfortunately, a lot of time had passed before I realized it and then it was something I was having to monitor almost every other day to stay on top of. Needless to say, none of us needs to be doing that if Apple is saying they will take care of it!

So, if someone could let me know if this reset option works that would be fantastic. Thank you

Some people are saying it does and some are saying it doesn’t. I think there’s something causing it that we haven’t quite figured out yet, which is why it works for some people that doesn’t for others. (Nevertheless, this issue is unacceptable, not trying to excuse it.) At this point, however, all we can do is let you know what works for us. As I said, in my post above, do a reset, but you don’t have to set it up from scratch – just restore a back up. Once it’s restored, try not to change screen time settings too often. Again, this worked for me, but I don’t know if it will work for everyone.
