If your iPad is unresponsive, connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge undisturbed format least an hour. Then, while still connected to external power, try a forced-restart:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If iPad still doesn’t turn on, or if it gets stuck during start up, see the Apple Support article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t turn on or is frozen. Or if your iPad isn’t working correctly after you restart it, see the iPad Support website.

If you continue to experience difficulties, you will need to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, if you have access to another Apple device, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

With iPad plugged into power,

For much newer design iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset/forced restart procedure for the new 2018-2022 iPad Pros, 2020/21 iPad Air 4 and 5, the 2021 iPad Mini 6 and the new 2022, 10th gen base models,

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button

2. Then immediately press and release the volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the top single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018-2022 iPad will boot up completely to the iPad’s Lock screen.

Best of Luck to You!

I just received a brand new iPad Pro 12.9 inch M2 model today. The first thing I did was connect it to the provided charger and cable to wall power to charge the battery. This was a fully functioning outlet. The first oddity was no bling sound from the iPad when the cable was connected. The iPad stayed connected to wall power for several hours before I tried booting it up. When I did try starting it, the iPad did nothing at all. All I got was a black screen. The special restart procedure mentioned here and elsewhere has no effect. This iPad is dead on arrival straight out of the box. I’m leaving it connected to wall power overnight via the provided charger to see if I have any luck tomorrow. If I don’t, then I’ll have to take this to the Genius Bar. So far, this is a very disappointing beginning with this iPad. Hopefully the story improves tomorrow.

The Genius Bar tech ran some tests on the iPad Pro and confirmed it was neither receiving a charge nor emitting a charge. It was completely dead. Never made a sound and still wouldn't turn on. The staff apologized for my inconvenience and replaced the defective iPad with an identical new unit that powers on as it should.

The Genius Bar tech thinks the iPad I had ordered through the Apple store probably sat uncharged in the Apple warehouse for so long that the battery depleted to a point of no return and died.
