Baffling Auto-Correct/Typing Issues on iPad Pro

Since the iPadOS 16 update, my iPad Pro (11 inch 3rd generation) has been exhibiting annoying issues with the virtual keyboard. Most notably, when I'm typing a word and it offers up some suggestions to complete it, more often than not, if I select one of the suggestions, it won't actually insert the suggestion, it will leave the word incomplete. What's more, when I go back to correct it, it will have removed the correct word from the suggestions, and will make several attempts at inserting a wrong word based off of the remaining letter I'm typing in ignoring that I'm adding on to an existing word. I end up having to delete the entire word and start over.


I've also noticed that when holding the delete button, it no longer will start deleting entire words after a few seconds. Instead, once it gets to that point, it will start the normal cadence of pausing in between deletions, but it will continue to only delete a single character at a time. So rather than speeding up the deletion process, it will significantly slow down. When deleting a large amount of text, I end up having to lift my finger every so often to keep it moving at a normal pace.

Understanding if this is happening in multiple apps or only specific software will be a key first step. Test the behavior in different apps, both Apple developed and third party programs.


If you note this is specific to a single app, try the steps from Quit and reopen an app on iPad first:


  1. "To quit an app, open the App Switcher, then swipe up on the app.
  2. To reopen the app, go to the Home Screen (or the App Library), then tap the app."


If still not working as expected, or occurring across multiple apps, use Get Support to investigate this further with Apple directly.
