iOS 16.2 Facetime appending wrong country code

Attempted two different contacts in country +1 (USA)

My phone number is also +1, but am calling from indonesia +62

Facetime audio fails after replacing contacts +1 with +62

This was after upgrading from 15.x -- great timing for the holidays!

Fix is turning off "dial assist" - now my number shows up to receiver as "maybe" my name.
