Studio using late 2013 as monitor

Dec 22, 2022.

I just bought a Mac studio, OS 13.

I connected with the proper cable to my late 2013 27 iMac to use as monitor. Nothing.

I presumed it might be a cable issue, but in researching the problem, I think I read that Monterey DOES NOT support external or target display.

On the other hand, I further read, I think, that this was a minor glitch that was fixed in 13.1

Can my late 2013 iMac 27 be used as a monitor for my brand new Studio?

iMac 27″, macOS 10.12

I’m waiting on the cable in the mail now, USB-C to Mini DisplayPort. It is not an Apple cable, however.

I also wonder, if the OS systems permit, if a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable would work? The Studio has 1 HDMI port.

I am sorry to disappoint you, but no, a Mini DisplayPort will not work, and in fact would not have worked with any mac as the source.

Even though the connector is the same, the hardware for MiniDisplayPort and Thunderbolt 2 are two different things. Your mac only ever supported Target Display Mode via a Thunderbolt cable - and it still does.

The problem is that support on the side of the Mac Studio is almost certainly nonexistent.

But to make sure we cover all the bases: what exactly have you connected the two? You said you used "the proper cable" but did not elaborate on that. If it had any hope of working, it had to be an adapter from Thunderbot 3 to Thunderbolt 2, and a Thunderbolt 2 cable.

I can certainly sympathize. I have for years used a 21" iMac as a second display for my mac; but I decided against buying the TB3-TB2 adapter just to try this with my current MBP, and settled on a cheaper display (which I had lying around, but would probably have cost less than the adapter...)

My late 2013 27iMac OS was 10.12.6. Pretty old I think. I hope that helps.

My understanding, for what it's worth, is that the 27 could be used as a 2nd monitor (I did it for 5 years), however the new Studio does not support the old mini DisplayPort technology necessary.

The problem is not with the 27, it's the too-new new Macs.

Have used both previously and have been satisfied each time.

Who knows if this machines value could be used for a Better Hi-Res Display from Apple

Thank you very much.

I have 2 other monitors, one of them a new 32 inch 4k. I make books and I need a third monitor, and I have used the 27 iMac as a second monitor before, no problem.

The 27 iMac has 10.12.6 Sierra, so that fits in with the “older” that you suggest.

Thanks. I will give it the old college try with the Apple cables you suggest.

As I understand it, the problem is not with my old iMac, or the cables. The problem is with A) the Studio, or B) the new OS Monterey?

And, just throwing this out there, is there any rationale for Apple ending this ability?

Also, I saw some video that offered the capability with some 3rd party gadget and software, but I doubt I would ever go down that path, especially for a 10-year old computer that might die any second. But, it still hums like a top now.

That is interesting.

It should be noted that the two imacs in the video are pretty old (2012 and 2013; they were made to run Monterey by using a third party hack, as described in the video).

I do not have the means to test this.

I think I can explain away the "only works with Windows keyboard" claim.

The person in that video had a mac keyboard on the 2013, and a windows keyboard on the 2012.

The 2013 does not support Target Display Mode, so that is why it did not work. If he had switched the keyboards between the two macs, he could have confirmed that it is the specific model of iMac and not the keyboard that is the limitation.
