Trying to "Update Apple ID Settings"

This notification pops up all the time. After I hit "Continue" twice, a box appears titled "Enter your Mac password." Then it shows my "User Name" in faint gray letters; this is not my Apple ID. Simultaneously, it asks for my Password. It will not take my current password, nor any iteration of old passwords. What is "user name" as opposed to "Apple ID"? Whenever I encounter this, I end up hitting "cancel" in frustration. Even though I am warned that some "amount services will not be available until you sign in again," I have not noticed any curtailed activity.

Hi Jamie Dales,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you're being prompted to enter a password that isn't your Apple ID password.

Based on what you're describing, it sounds like it's the password you use to log into your Mac for this user account. If you don't remember your Mac login password, you can reset it as outlined here: If you forgot your Mac login password

We hope this helps.

Take care!

Hey there Jamie Dales,

To set some expectations, to log into Apple Support Communities, you'd use a separate user name that would be unrelated to the issue you described.

Upon reviewing the details discussed so far, we'd like to confirm more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. When did the prompt to 'Update Apple ID Settings' first start to show on your Mac?
  2. You mentioned that it asks for what sounds like your Mac user account login details when clicking upon 'Update Apple ID Settings', but you also mentioned selecting 'Cancel'. If it's asking for your Mac user account login details, what occurs when you put those in when prompted?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  4. If you have a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 13.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!

  1. Months, maybe even a couple of years, ago
  2. I can’t enter a User Name. Jamie Dales Cure (my full name, but not my Apple ID) shows up with spaces in gray font. I am unable to edit that. I hit “Cancel” only after I have tried every password I have ever used. I have used the User Name above, but the password that goes with it does not work.
  3. I will try Restart. The result is the same. Under “Update Apple ID Settings” it says “Some account services will not be available until you sign in again.” However, I have not noticed an inability to perform a function.
  4. My iMac is so old (late 2013, even though I bought it in early 2015) that the most recent OS I can have is Catalina 10.15.7. Because it’s so old, I rarely use my iMac, and use my iPad or MacBook Pro instead.

Bottom line, I need a new desktop, eh? Thanks.

Jamie

Hey Jamie Dales,

Those are great details! If you haven't already, double-check the Apple ID settings in System Preferences to make sure all looks as it should there. Here's a guide to help, just in case: Set up your Apple ID preferences on Mac - Apple Support

Without providing personal details, does it show your correct Apple ID and settings there? If so, does it match the alert that appears?

Keep us posted.

Take care!
