ipad suddenly cannot send mail

asking on behalf of my wife.... her ipad and phone have been been working normally but suddenly she has found that emails will not send from the ipad: there is a message "cannot send mail, username or password is incorrect". On pressing send the "swooshing" noise occurs but the message ends up in the outbox but not the sent or drafts box.

Mail is still received on both phone and ipad, and mail will send from the iphone. The mail account is @bt.com. Passwords were not changed recently, and being apple of course I cannot see what the passwords are. I have tried re-entering the passwords which I have stored elsewhere and there is no brief indication of what each character is as it is being entered in the password field when I re-entered it.

Suggestions please??

Are you able to access your email using a web-browser and BT’s webmail page? If so, you have proved that your Username and Password are correct.

If you are confident that you are using the correct account credentials, you can start fault finding:

What happens when you try to receive or send email? Do you see any errors - and if so, what do you see?

If email is failing to send or receive, you are likely to see indicative errors at the bottom of the mail sidebar - the wording of the error usually providing sufficient information to determine the nature of the problem.

If errors suggest a password error, you can update your account password in iPad settings. Note that you must input the password in two locations - one for your send (SMTP) server, and the other for the receive (IMAP) server:

Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your BT Mail account] > [Account] >

  • [Incoming Mail Server] Password - update your password as required
  • [Outgoing Mail Server] SMTP > [Primary Server] > Password - update your password as required

Deleting and re-adding your email account is sometimes the easiest way to resolve a problem with a specific Mail account. After deleting the account, perform a forced restart before re-adding the email account to your iPad.

  • Delete account:

Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your Mail Account] > Delete Account

  • Force restart the iPad:

Force restart iPad - Apple Support

  • Add Mail Account:

Settings > Mail > Add Account
