transfer photos from iPod classic to iMac

I have an iPod classic that has photos on it I would like to get onto my computer and off of the iPod itself. I have tried different ways like importing to the photo app and looking through the hidden folders in finder to try and find them. I can see them on the physical iPod but when plugged in they are no where to be found. the software is up to date on the iPod and disk use is enabled.

if anyone has any tips or tricks to get these photos I would be so grateful.

When you sync photos to an iPod classic there is an option to include original resolution images. If that wasn't selected the device only has relatively low-res versions adjusted for the small screen. It should be possible to see and copy off any original images in Finder. Extracting the thumbnails requires third party recovery software such as TouchCopy. It is a bit dated now, but look at the list of recovery tools in Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Community and see if there any others that are extant that will pull images from an iPod classic.
