upgraded my M1 2020 Macbook to Ventura 13.1 - built in display is lagging

Hi all,

I recently updated my M1 2020 MacBook Air 16GB Ram. The built-in display is lagging, leaving trails, fonts are unclear, and not solid. It's taking a little bit longer to boot up, but otherwise the device seems functional. I've never had any issues with this device prior to the upgrade to Ventura.

This video is only a small example of the ghosting in lines that are placed as I use the device is completely unuseable.

I have 90 gigs of available space on my SSD. I read a similar post with this is happening to someone on an external display, and they OP had no issues on the built-in display. My issues are related to the built-in display only I don't have an external display to test at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

I don't see any of the usual suspects in the report. It looks pretty clean to me. Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the screen lagging problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Also create and log into a new, basic, admin user account, Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and see if the problem persists. This tells us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide.

Note:  do not launch any 3rd party apps in the account so as to not install any of the supporting files that most create.

If the problem persists then your original account has software installed that is causing the problem.

Thanks so much for the suggestion I did try turning off true tone.

Regrettably I didn't improve things at all. Also, as I posted in other responses, it still happening even in safe mode before I even select the user so it's an OS level dilemma. Not specific to my user.

This specific description bothers me.

This maybe in fact a Hardware issue.

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading.

It will only load the bare Minimum of core elements of the Operating System to allow the computer to function at a reduced level of performance including Visual Display

As Luis suggested: download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can evaluate the report to see if we can determine the cause of the problem.

As I posted to old toad, I tried to post a video, but the moderator keeps taking the link out. I have attached a picture. Hopefully the picture is visible.

Essentially what's happening is there's a series of super fine horizontal lines I keep appearing on the screen every one second they go off for a second, and then reappear for a second. That probably makes no sense at all but that's the best way I can describe it.

So I went into safe mode as suggested. The same thing is happening. On even the login screens, I can start seeing an imprint of what used to be on my browser coming up in the background. It's very bizarre.

I have attached another video link of what is happening. It seems the moderator keeps taking them out. I don't know if there's another way of sharing a video of what I'm experiencing.

Is there a way I can downgrade back off of Ventura ? This is my main mac, but I still need to make it functional.

Jan 13, 2023 4:37 PM in response to PRP_53

Sure I can try that. I wanted to give a further update. I was able to use an external display, and there were no issues on that device.

I did also wonder is there a wave me downgrading to the previous operating system? I agree with you. It appears to be hardware related at this point, but it seems bizarre that the hardware would work perfectly up until I change the operating system.

Thanks to everybody for being so helpful with us. I really appreciate your input.

The only true way to know for sure if it is Hardware Issue has had a suggestion already put forth.

As for suddenly appearing upon an upGrade , Hardware can act up at any time even on an almost Brand New Machine.

Should this be a genuine Hardware issue - even downgrading to a previous version of macOS will not fix the Hardware

If the user is intent on downgrading ( which I suggest not until the machine has been evaluated )

The link below will offer possible solutions

There are two very different methods and Depends 100% on Intel or M1 /M2 Apple Silicon computer
