Do you need a susbscription to use carplay in a vehicle?

There is no charge for that feature from Apple.

Some manufacturers have moved to a subscription model for some features in their vehicles, including things like heated seats, remote start, and in some cases CarPlay.

Contact your dealer if it’s not working for you.

No, you just need a car with CarPlay feature among its media services.
