Why would a MacBook Pro only charge with an Insignia brand USB hub and original charging cable despite the original power adapter working on other devices?

I have a MacBook Pro 2020 13in running Monterrey 13.1. Battery health is “normal”.


My MBP has worked perfectly until today when I noticed my battery was low even though the charger was connected to the wall and to the laptop.


I got the “low battery” warning and assumed my charger disconnected from the wall. I adjusted everything and my MPB still would not charge. I tried to use my iPad pro charger and it would not charge the MBP either.

The weird thing is that my iPad pro was charging right before I disconnected it from the charger to try and charge my MBP. I tried to connect the iPad back to the iPad charger and it would not charge either.

Its like my MBP disable my iPad charger from working.


Next, I tried my MBP charger on my iPad and it worked, and then I tried the iPad charger again on the iPad and it also worked again for some reason. I connected a usb-c to Lightning cable to the power adapter for my MBP and connected my iPhone to it, and it worked as well.


Fast forward to this evening, I bought a new MacBook 67W power adapter hoping that for some reason that is all it was even though the original was working on other devices. The new power adapter did not charge my MacBook or my iPad Pro but would charge my phone.


Now neither my iPad Pro or MacBook Pro charge with any apple power adapter. My iPad will charge using a Belkin power adapter and usb-c cable.

My MacBook will only charge (very slowly) connected to an Insignia brand usb hub via the original usb-c charging cable it came with. (I tried several outlets and they all work fine for other devices so that’s not the problem)


What could be causing this?

All of the power adapters, charging cables, and device are working properly, just not together.


I contacted apple support and they set up a genius bar appointment for Saturday morning. I’m hoping to get this resolved by then so that I don’t have to make the trip to the Apple Store store cities away.

Is this an Intel Mac or an M1 Mac? If an Intel Mac, then try an SMC Reset (read the article since the process has changed with 2018-2020 Intel Macs).


Unplugging the charger from the electrical outlet can reset the charger's internal protective circuitry since some power issues can put the charger into a weird state.


Try connecting the charger to another USB-C port especially on the other side of the laptop.


Also, try rotating the USB-C connector of the charging cable 180 degrees upside down in case the USB-C port is half bad.

Make sure to take your Apple charger & charging cable with you so they can be tested as well if necessary.

Hello,

thank you for you response.

I have tried all of the steps above and nothing has seemed to work.

I currently have my set up functioning as normal except I am charging my MacBook with my Nintendo Switch charger.

I am not using my apple chargers at the moment but they do all work on other devices.

I will have to see what the Genius Bar has to say this Saturday.
