Language on merchant terminal (pinautomaat) changes when paying with iphone

When I use my iphone to pay in a store in The Netherlands, the payment terminal of the merchant (pinautomaat) will switch from Dutch to Spanish to inform me about the progress of the payment. This has been happening for a week or so. I have not changed anything in my settings and I did not get a new debit card from my bank. It’s a Dutch card from a Dutch bank and it has been working fine for years. Language settings on my iPhone are still set to English, Dutch and Greek (in this order) and region settings are set to Netherlands. Never had a problem before.

Thanks for reaching out Tos Cook,

It sounds like you're seeing some unusual behavior when you try and use Apple Pay. We can help.

For an issue like this, you may want to confirm that it is happening at multiple merchants, or at just one in particular. If its one, the issue might be on their end. If it happens at multiple locations, your best bet would be to Contact Apple for support and service and report the behavior.

Hope that helps.

Take care.
