No streaming video - Netflix, Hulu, etc on any browser. Not a new issue..?

Same story: open Netflix or Hulu in a browser, I can see ads and previews, but as soon as the NF/H logo sequence ends, it's just black screen with audio.

I've seen this issue around as I've been searching for a fix, but there doesn't seem to be anything helpful except random "try this" suggestions. I've cleared cache/cookies, different browsers, Chrome, Firefox and Safar, updated browsers, restarted device, nothing works. I did have video with Netflix for a moment after shut-down/restart, but it went away when I opened another tab to try Hulu.

Very annoying. Has anyone found a fix for this?

OOOOKAY. So I'm running Displaylink Manager to use 2 external monitors and when I quit the application running, to view on my laptop only (no external monitors) I get video on Hulu and Netflix. That is the issue. The fix for Chrome is to turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome settings if you use DisplayLink, though doing the same in Firefox don't work and I can't find any equivalent in Safari.

Hello,

I had this issue and recommended my fix to another user who reported it worked for them as well. In our case it was an extension causing the issue. We both were using extensions which darken the background of webpages. After turning off the extension videos began to play normally again.

Use Safari extensions on your Mac - Apple Support

"Uninstall or turn off extensions

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Extensions.

  • To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.
  • To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button. If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it."

I hope this helps.
