How do you get Notifications for Google Chat to appear in Safari on an iMac

I've followed the instructions from Google and from Apple about setting up Notifications and I am still having the same problem.

I'm not on DND. I have all the necessary settings set from the instructions for both parties.

There is some mention of a 'background' app or something.

I would really like to rectify this situation. I am using the latest OS on an iMac made in 2021.

iMac 24″, macOS 13.1
