Mail crashing after installing macOS Ventura (clean install)

I am at my wits end with the Mail.app and macOS Ventura - it seems no matter what I do to fix this issue it continues to crash. It seems that macOS Ventura is the problem. Mail.app never crashed on Monterey or on Big Sur. I was on a support call with Apple Support and went through just about every possible solution and nothing seems to work.

The issue was believed to have been resolved yesterday however, today while attempting to delete an email in the mail.app it crashed again. I was on the phone with a third support rep and had agreed to erase my SSD and reinstall macOS (clean install) I installed Monterey and before I added any other apps I upgraded to Ventura 13.2

I am expecting the tech to call me back within the next 10 minutes because as I was going through my email again the mail.app crashed and it does not matter which account I am in or which email I am looking at to delete it crashes.

Previously, I booted into safe boot and it still caused mail.app to crash. I have tried adding a test account on my MBA m1. to see if this issue was only on my account and the crash once again happened. I am seriously thinking Apple has bloated macOS too much instead of adding new features rather they are useful or not Apple would be better off making sure what we already have is working. Sadly, this is starting to remind me of Windows (chose your flavor)

With a fresh system and no user files it's beginning to sound more like some sort of hardware issue. The next step would be to take it into the nearest  Apple Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider for free diagnostic tests.  Preferably a Genius Bar.

Hi Mark,

your suggestion does not appear to be the answer for my issue. thank you kindly for your thoughts. As I have mentioned earlier I went through just about every troubleshooting step I could think of plus any that Apple Support themselves have suggested.

It does not seem to matter which mail bundle I use. Apple, Gmail, or Outlook. they each have been tested individually and together. a boot into safe boot reproduces the same results. Wiping out my SSD and doing a fresh and clean install of macOS Ventura 13.2 does not resolve the issue. Creating a test account in addition to my account on the Mac also reproduces the issue.

I spoke to another Apple Support rep and senior support rep today regarding another glitch that is happening within macOS Ventura 13.2 and that one has to do with autofill and safari + hide my email. In that issue safari only offers hide my email as the only option when filling in an email address on a website. (one support rep spoke up and says it appears that is going to be the case with mail.app and going forward-which I think if true Apple may have shot itself with that kind of forcing people to use hide may email.

Apple Support had me run their diagnostics app they sent me that captures all of the logs and sent it back to them in the mean time I going to use another browser and email app. until either they get the issue resolved with Ventura or I will simply downgrade to Monterey because I was not able to duplicate those issues on the latest version of Monterey.

So sorry to hear this, MobileMeKevin :-(

I wonder, could it actually be connected in some roundabout way with 'Hide my email'?

Extreme though it sounds, what happens when you launch (a freshly installed) Mail with no accounts added?!

I've found that when I've had to go through the Capture Data routine with Apple, they do usually come up with something useful :-)

Good luck!

With the greatest of respect, that does surprise me :-)

For Mail to crash with no configuration on a clean install does suggest that there is something else going on - some other contention or incompatibility…

What happens when you create a new User and launch Mail after the clean install you've done with no accounts active? Maybe the crashlogs will indicate the culprit.

I just wish you could get it fixed.

You would also need to delete all existing copies of the e-mail.

But before you do that, you should also post the DKIM header so we can look at it and see if my hypothesis is true. Or you could also post which e-mail notification this is so that someone else could try to subscribe and reproduce the problem. If someone else can reproduce the problem with those e-mails, then you have definitely found the cause and can be confident that deleting all the existing messages will fix the problem.

Old Toad,

I am not sure why the diagnostics would indicate that I having restarted in 2 days. My MacBook Air M1 late 2020 has been restarted more than once between 2 days ago and today. - The Apple Support Tech on the phone had me reboot it today. and the system install requires a reboot and that was done just yesterday.

While rebooting helps clear up things when you are experiencing issues this obviously has not fixed my issue. And the Mac does not always need to be rebooted unless there are issues one the main parts of trouble shooting as I.T. we always ask when was the last time a client has rebooted their Mac. - I can assure you this computer has not only been rebooted but shut down restarted, restarted in safe boot mode as well and as I have mentioned all the testing has been done even in safe boot and the problem continues. Further research in the form you will notice that other members also have issues with mail.app and Ventura 13.2 and the issue with Hide my Email.

at least you were able to pin it down to one email account, for me not so lucky - I have tested all three of my email accounts separately Apple Mail (iCloud), Gmail, and Outlook. individually and even without an email account set up. Currently no third party software installed. mail.app continues to crash. I know I am about to jinx myself (hahaha) do I dare say so far this morning it appears to be stable? I know as soon as I post this reply it will crash LOL with no reason.

That is great to hear AIS001, hopefully it will be resolved for you.

Unfortunately for me that is not the case, I am still waiting for Apple to get back with me regarding a fix that may or may not be in the works. A work around that doesn't require me to go through hoops.

But, at least for me I did come up with my own work around (anyone would have thought of it but it's not something I prefer - As I prefer to stay within the Apple-Eco system) I have downloaded the Outlook email client for macOS. Of course it wanted to give me a bit of trouble setting up my apple email account, apparently you have to use the create a specific password for the Outlook App @Apple.ID web page because when I tried to use my password to my Apple email account it would not work. I guess since your Apple.ID password and Apple Email passwords are one and the same.

Interesting I discovered this on my own after being in a chat session with Apple Support they were of no help. Just getting the Apple Support Rep to verify if my Apple.ID password and email password were one and the same was like pulling teeth - they wanted other information that had nothing to do with my issue. Of course I would have remembered that they are one in the same except for the fact my Apple devices all use some form of Touch/Face ID to login without me having to type my password in so I naturally did not remember the password for email and or the fact it was one and the same.

The adventure continues...

So here it is February 4th, 2023 and still no solutions from Apple. The work arounds that Apple suggested also cause additional problems once you have upgraded to macOS Ventura 13.2.

After all of the previous suggestions in previous posts have been tried it has not been resolved. A clear indicator to me is that this issue began with macOS Ventura 13.1 (possibly 13.0) but I have yet to verify that version.

Apple suggested I roll back my macOS to Monterey the latest version. However, after doing so many other issues began. apparently after rolling back to Monterey certain services no long want to work. Such as Apple Wallet on MacBook Air M1. all due to security features that were only in 13.2.

Another issue I discovered in macOS Ventura 13.2 is that my LG Slim DVD Writer no longer works. As I did a search for others experiencing this issue it apparently is not the only brand of external drives that no longer work since Apple's 13.2 update. I verified my drive works by running Parallels Desktop 18 and Windows 11 the drive shows up there in Windows while it will not show up in macOS. Before testing it with the VM I almost damaged the drive out of frustration thinking I somehow broke the drive. When it is macOS Ventura 13.2 that has caused it to not function. The Host os being macOS messes with the VM-Windows 11 while Win11 sees the drive unlike macOS it does not access the drive for any use instead I am getting errors that lead to macOS Ventura interfering with compatibility.

My Printer an HP Envy 7155 Photo works as expected, my External 2 TB hard drive I use for Time Machine and other copies works fine. Mail continues to crash although, there have been a few days that no crash occurred.

So, until Apple releases a fix (if any) I am stuck using Outlook.app for email and I am without a DVD writer, I use the DVD writer to watch the few movies that are not available for streaming or in iTunes or other services.

I am beginning to think that other owners are correct with the M1 MacBooks Air/Pro that you should get one with at least 16 GB of Ram - as Apple's basic unit only has 8 GB of Ram with the release of macOS Ventura its beginning to be obvious that 8 GB is no longer a good standard. I was very surprised that Apple continued with the 8 GB of Ram as the standard in the M2 MBA and Mac mini M2. Clearly Apple is bloating up the OS these days to where the minimum is not cutting it. I don't use Stage manager for two reason the lack of screen space on the 13" MBA and the fact its just another piece of software taking up precious memory so for now I Have that turned off.

My use of my MBA M1 is strictly personal and I am cringing at the thought of possibly switching to a freaking Windows 11 or newer PC. Or maybe Chromebook or even Ubuntu. neither of those OSes feel good to me I feel dirty and unclean (is that a thing with using those? LOL) more like just in my head. But the bloat, the bad idea that Apple think 8 GB of Ram with Ventura and newer versions of macOS is good enough makes me have nightmares (not really) about possibly switching because I know all too well those other platforms bring their own kind of head-aches I have been with macOS and Apple since 1991 so. I am hoping Apple would at least fix this bad idea - and for me in the future nothing less than 16 or 32 GB of Ram for now on. - Lesson learned.

I'm having the same problems with Mail in Ventura 13.2.1. I have never had such frequent and frustrating failures on earlier versions of Mac OS X. Like so many of you, I get more email in a day than I can handle, but today, for instance, I went seven hours with no new mail. Not even spam. I quit and restarted Mail, directed the app to Get Mail, etc., but nothing was coming in or going out. Then I lost a couple of emails that I was sure I had Sent, and they neither reached the recipient, not turned up in Drafts or Outbox. Just gone. Today, after a half-dozen crashes or striking dead keys when trying to send mail, I switched to Gmail for fear of losing important correspondence. The missing emails I had thought I had sent weren't there, either, which can only mean Apple Mail lost them. If it were anyone but Apple, there'd be **** to pay for releasing untested "upgrades" that were installed automatically overnight.

Hi bscooper547,

Thanks for posting your reply, After I had removed the offending email I no longer had the issue, so for me I have no idea if the issue is resolved but I no longer worry about it as I don't receive the email messages that was causing the Mail app to crash. I figured I had provided Apple support way more information I needed in order to help them to help me and I got nowhere with them on this issue. So, after my work around I stopped dealing with it. I have been happily using the Mail app for a few months now. Glad to hear you have success with your updates.

Just want to mention, I am not bashing Apple, as I understand crap happens and sometimes a fix needs a lot of attention. Apple is NOT perfect by any means but I am very happy with 99% of their Support. I have been a Happy Apple device owner since 1991.

I have folders and some rules but I get over 5000 non-spam emails a day so I only get my mailbox down on weekends. I have spam filters in place so thousands a day go there too, but I seem to be on many subscription lists as well. I unsubscribe but many still come. I wanted to try 'unroll me' but it is not available in my region. I am thinking of trying sanebox though - uses AI to take organization further than rules. I had the founder on my podcast as a guest - have recommended it to a few people (who got 140,000 emails a day) and they told me it changed their life. I will try it and see.
