M1 mac does not always go to sleep

My M1 13" macbook pro sometimes will not go to sleep. I am guessing that it is somehow related to external monitor but do not know for sure. I've tried shutting everything down but have not found the problem.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.2

Hi appleseed01,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that your MacBook Pro won't go to sleep as expected.

Is this happening when you go to the Apple Menu and choose Sleep or do you have a sleep schedule?

Are you using a MacBook Pro with Apple silicon or is it an Intel based MacBook?

Are you able to reproduce the same behavior if you boot into safe mode? This article outlines how to start in safe mode and what safe mode does: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

"Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.

Safe mode is particularly useful when you're trying to resolve an issue that doesn't seem to be associated with using any particular app. As always, keeping your software up to date is the first step toward resolving any software issue."

We look forward to your reply.

Cheers!

Hi

This is Macbook Pro with Apple silicon. I use the Apple menu to go to sleep. Some days it goes to sleep, other days it starts to but does not: main display and external display go blank for 1-2 seconds but come right back.

I have reproduced the same behavior after boot into safe mode.

The external monitor (Dell) has a built in hub, from which I have connected an external SSD hard drive. When sleep fails, I have tried ejecting the hard drive but still does not go to sleep.

Like I said, some days it goes to sleep and some days it does not.

Thanks
