videos received via text message are too bright

Yesterday i updated my iPhone 7 to the 15.7.3 software and now when i get videos via text message, they are too bright. I noticed the videos have "HDR" in the top left corner which was not there before the update. This only happens to new videos that are sent, if i view past videos sent via text message they appear fine. Why is this happening with the software update i installed yesterday?

I think I need to clarify, because the above solution is unhelpful.

I also have an iPhone 7 with the latest iOS update (15.7.3), but my wife has a 13 pro. She is texting me HDR videos, and these are all highly overexposed when I play them. FWIW, the thumbnails all appear normal, even slightly desaturated. This problem started only after the most recent update. Up until this software update I've been able to view HDR and cine-mode videos that my wife texted me from her phone with no issues.

If I switch off HDR on MY phone, it makes no difference. It all has to do with incoming videos via text, at least so far.

Aside from asking my wife to switch off HDR on her end, is there another solution? This seems like a bug to me.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yup, I’m having the same exact issue and I have an iPhone 7 Plus. I’ve read recently they are discontinuing the latest iOS upgrades from reaching iPhone 7 and below. They are currently on like iOS 16.3. This definitely has to be a tactic to make us upgrade smh. YouTube videos also get overexposed with this stupid HDR display that wasn’t an issue previously smh.

I have iPhone 7 Plus. The problem is with RECEIVING hdr videos. I tried turning on/off hdr on my phone camera settings but it makes no difference in trying to view RECEIVED hdr videos. However, I’ve found a solution but it takes extra steps. That is to forward the hdr videos to myself in Facebook messenger and they play without the washed out too bright problem. If you have a settings fix for receiving and viewing hdr videos on “text” please share.

I have an iPhone 7+ and from what I gathered from all the researching I have done online, there is no support for iPhone 7/7+ to view HDR (High Dynamic Range) videos properly, so the HDR video has to be converted to SDR format….there’s quite a few HDR to SDR converter softwares available on the Windows and Mac platforms….the iMovie app on iOS would work as an HDR/SDR converter, but iMovie won’t run unless you have iOS ver 16, which is not supported on iPhone 7/7+. Most all the HDR/SDR converter apps have to be purchased to convert your videos….I tried using an app called Filmora video editor (a free 3-day trial) and it converted perfectly the HDR videos to SDR…..I still haven’t found a free iOS app to convert the videos.

Two possible solutions (1) Press the solid blue square (if it goes solid) with downward arrow in bottom right corner>select Save to Photos in pop-up. HDR videos have then been playing normally in my Photos App. (2) Send text iMessage containing HDR video to yourself (your own number) then Save video to Photos in Photos App.

I believe this iPhone 7 issue has been created by Apple.

I’m running iOS 15.7.4 on my 7 Plus….what version iOS is on your phone? The reason I’m asking is that I can copy an HDR video to my Photos (pressing downward arrow when solid blue), and it’s saved to my photos (as an HDR video). Then when I try to select that video and try to send it to my own number in a text msg, a popup window tells me “Unable To Share”, “there was an error while preparing to share”.”Please try again later.” I can repeat this dozens of times and the same popup msg keeps showing.

Running iOS 15.7.4 on iPhone 7.

First, send HDR video from iMsg to your own phone number on your own iPhone7/plus phone.

Then from video in your own phone number message, send & save that to your Photos App.

i don’t get any pop-ups at all.

I have no explanation or clue as to what happens, but HDR videos might transition between HDR & SDR somehow. They eventually still play from Photos App as HDR videos.

Apple is responsible and needs to supply a fix.

Same as described before here as well.

i7 received video from i13 and i13 pro max. and they are all bright. Between i13 and i13 pro max no issue.

hdr off in the settings. Sending video from i13 or i13 pro max to i7 no bright video anymore.

all with latest iOS as of today.

all via iMessgae app. I know it is a ****** solution but now we use messenger. :))) there no issue with bright video. Quality however not the same :DDDD

Any chance that Apple is doing something here ? It worked before !!!

I get what you are saying but I shouldn’t have to send a mesg and instructions to all senders to change their default video settings so they can resend videos. Because that would be everyone in my contacts.

It looks fine in their end, it looks fine when sent via other methods, like WhatsApp or google, so Apple needs to figure a way to make it look fine in their own system. It used to work and they broke it.

videos received via text message are too bright
