spotlight simply not working

Not just searching for files, it won't even do basic math, like when I type "2+2" into Spotlight on other Macs, it fills in with "=4" Not on this MBP.

I have indexed & reindexed & it just doesn't matter -- Spotlight does not work.

I wiped the machine, reinstalled a fresh copy of macOS, Spotlight still does not work.

Spotlight does find some Apple apps, including Contacts, Mail, & FaceTime, but not others like Safari, iMovie (see attached screen grabs).

It finds no non-native apps.

It finds no files by name or any other attribute.

The MBP in question is a MacBook Pro (13-inch 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports); 2.3GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5; 16GB RAM; running macOS Monterey Version 12.6.1.

Please advise.

Thanks.

I am running macOS 12.6.3 and when I enter the application name alone, it is the first Spotlight hit, at least for the examples you have shown. However, just entering the application name causes Spotlight to apply that search to every selected Spotlight search results category, including looking inside documents for any string matching the search term. That is inefficient.

As for math, I can enter either 2+2 or 2 + 2 and the immediate result is 4.

Spotlight has reserved keywords that improve search results. If you want to restrict your search results to filenames only, then use the full or partial case-insensitive spelling that you want to find using the name keyword:

name:saf

and for me, the top result is Safari.

name:sub

finds the Sublime Text programmer's editor as the top hit.
