Mac keeps switching to speakers when i connect my airpods

I have a macbook air and reacently bought airpods pro and they connect with bluetooth fine, but if i stop playing something on the airpods then the mac will automatically switch to the speakers. For example, Im playing a video of a class and using the airpods audio, if I pause on that video to take notes and dont play it within seconds then my mac will switch to the internal speakers, and everytime I replay the video I have to switch the audio back to the airpods. They dont actually disconnect from the bluetooth, the mac just switches the audio. I have updated and restarted them but nothing works. This doesnt happens with my iphone

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 13.2

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities danielablack,

Try turning off automatic switching for your AirPods and test to see whether there's any change. It may be that your AirPods are automatically switching to another nearby device.

On your iPhone or iPad
1: With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > [your AirPods].
2: Tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
3: Tap Connect to This iPhone [or iPad].
4: Tap When Last Connected to This iPhone [or iPad].
5: To turn on this feature again, tap Automatically.

On your Mac
1: With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Bluetooth.
2: Click the Options button next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
3: From the Connect to This Mac menu, choose When Last Connected to This Mac.
4: To turn this feature on again, choose Automatically.

Next, select your AirPods under Output on your Mac:

Click the volume control  in the menu bar and choose your AirPods3 or speakers under Output. If you're using macOS Big Sur or later, sound controls are in Control Center.

Switch your AirPods to another device

We hope this helps!
